Thinking of buying a '97 850 Sedan 850 1997

Hi all,
I'm looking for a new volvo and came across a 97 850 turbo sedan. From the pics and the seller description it looks to be in excellent condition, maybe not quite mint, but still really good. My question is what do I really need to look for on these... I've always owned 240's so in general I can inspect it, but was wondering if there is anything quirky I need to be looking for! btw its got around 150k and they want 2300 for it.
Thanks
-cp

I have a sweet 1999 S70 AWD, 185K. Just did a complete valve job at 175K. Everything on this Pre-Ford works like a charm. Check it out:

IPD List 850 1997

I'll add the heater cooling hoses. If one of those fails, you're going to be stranded.

That's a good list over at IPD. Only thing on there that I *haven't* done yet is the transmission interlock.

...And now I WANT to know where that override button is located.

I just picked up a 1994 NA 850 Sedan. I'm already sorting the issues. I'm crossing my finger that the AC is just discharged and/or the compressor is not engaging.

Also... sometimes ('though not often) buying from someone who knows next to nothing about Volvos can net you good deal.

Check when the timing belt was replaced. The interval is 70K miles. It could be overdue and in that case, along with a new water pump, could cost you upwards of $500+. The car should have a cabin air filter and make sure it's being used. Test drive it enough to get the tranny warmed up to check for any shifting problems. Strut bushings wear out and cause clunks from the front end. Turbo oil lines tend to leak also.

A couple of other things to check on the 850:

1. The cooling system. Particularly the radiator. At that age and mileage it might be due for a radiator. Also take a good look at the rest of the system. The water pumps are usually good for 200K +. Other than the radiator, the cooling system is pretty bulletproof but at that age you might need to replace some parts.

2. Look for engine oil leaks. Make sure it doesn't have a rear main seal leak. Expensive!

3. Listen to Klaus, he is the FWD/AWD guru...:)

If that 850 has been well taken care of it, it should have plenty of good miles left. Like a 240, these cars can go 200-300K+ with proper maintenance. Plus they are a blast to drive!

Good luck,
J

Hi, I know this response might be in the wrong forum, however after seeing that there is only 12 posts in the s/v40 forum... Anyway I'm also looking at an 02 v40 very good condition, no rust, etc... from what the seller says its in really good shape.. he wants 2800, its an 02 with 174k, apparently all work since he's had it has been done at a volvo repair shop... w/records... Again I've heard some of the parts are more expensive , any other issues to be wary about?
Thanks again!

Volvos no longer get rusty body panels as the entire car is galvanized.

The 850 probably has AC issues, you do need to check the ATF for color as most never flush the tranny. ATF dipstick is behind the left headlight and under the air intake.

The S40 is a little cramped in the rear seat. There was a major update for 2003. It is also a little noisier than the 850, less comfortable on long trips.

Does the AC still need converting on these ones? Also with the atf, are you looking for kind of a milky color? as opposed to just a clean type of color...
Also the 02 was a v40 not that its a huge difference...
Thanks!

All ACs came with r134a starting in 1993. It is the evaporator on the 850s that tended to corrode and leak - think of the 240 heater as far as fixing.

The ATF is comes pink. Dirt will turn it red and eventually brown. Black is burned and the tranny is toast.

To test the AC when it is cold out, turn the AC on and set the air flow to defrost. That should cycle the compressor.

I'm new to volvo's and recently bought a 97 850 GLT. Here's another site that reviews what to look at when buying.
