Ratchet from the right front wheel S40-V40 2000

My V40 has 23,000 and has recently starting to make a ratchet noise when I back out of the driveway in the morning (vehicle drive train is cold) and shift into drive from reverse. Then when I slowly accelerate, it ratchets slightly again, then warms up and doesn't do it until the next morning.

Sound is definitely coming from the right front, (transaxle?) and sounds like a quick 4 or 5 click ratchet, almost like gears are grinding - very strange.

Otherwise, no other problems to date, except for three headlamp bulbs replaced already, last one was under warranty! Don't ask me why.

Jim

Have you replaced the rear brake pads yet? Just curoius if the V-40

wagon has the same problem as the S-40. You might check the front pads for wear. That rachet might be the chatter tab indicating low brake pads.

Re: Ratchet from the right front wheel S40-V40 2000

Check the torque of your lugnuts, especially if recently rotated. For some very odd reason, S/V 40s have a problem with their wheels/hubs in that they rust (corrode) very badly in a short period of time and whenever they're rotated, both the wheels and hubs need to be sanded with grease applied to the center contact area, then hand torqued ONLY (not tightened with an impact gun using a torque stick).

This has become a common problem and only occurs with S/V 40s, no other Volvo.

Re: Ratchet from the right front wheel S40-V40 2000

I had the same problem with the lug nuts on one front tire. Not long after having the tires rotated at the dealership, I started noticing a noise, like something was warped in the front left tire. I didn't do anything about it right away, but one day while cleaning the rims I noticed 3 of the lug nuts could be removed by hand! I thought maybe someone tried to steal my rim, since the only tight lug nut was a locking lug nut. After I tightened them, the noice stopped. Scared the hell out of me! I'll be sure to check them a couple times after any future rotations.

      John,

Excellent feedback and very interesting, I'll check them.

      Thanks,

      Jim
