s40 vs. v40 S40-V40 2001

Are there any drawbacks in performance etc. to the V over the S? I am switching from an SUV and would like to maintain the load capacity but am still looking for something that handles well.

Thanks

    Re: s40 vs. v40 S40-V40 2001

Wow, these replies almost make me wish I took the V instead of the S!

If I remember right, specs show slightly more headroom for backseat passengers with the V, at least MY2000. Probably no more legroom though, but maybe a big person can sit up straighter. :-)

One small reason I chose the S was the hope of better A/C performance with less cubic feet and less window. The A/C is fantastic, more than needed even in Dallas, so I expect the V to do fine on A/C too.

Volvo has always done well at making the wagon and sedan variants of the same car very close in performance (though that seems to have gone out the window recently now that they are placing the wagon as a slightly larger car) but as the s/v40 are still done the old way chose the one you want, the differences will probably be unoticable unless you are looking for ultimate performance, and even then the differences between two s40's could be as big as between the sedan and the wagon. I'm leaning towards a v40 to replace the 740 in the near future.

    Re: s40 vs. v40 S40-V40 2001

I'm probably opening a can of worms here but here's my take: The S40 is probably a tad faster in the quarter mile (less weight), but the V40 has the advantage of 'slightly' better handling due to the better weight distrubution (closer to 50-50 than the S40). At higher speeds, wagons also usually have better drag coeffieients.

I have heard a few complaints from S40 owners as the lack of space. Both the wagon and sedan have minimal leg room for the rear passengers. Load wise, I've been quite happy with the capacity of my V40.

I agree, although I believe the V40's lower drag coefficient makes up for the slightly higher weight over the S40.

If you look at TME's (www.tme.com) info the the upgrades they offer, they claim faster times in the V40... certainly due to better drag coefficient. Too bad those numbers aren't easily available any more. I remember in the 80s manufacturers published their coefs in their literature... back when the teardrop car was envogue.

The wagon is very nimble. I especially agree with the handling being more balanced on the wagon. A4 Avant is noticeably better than the A4. I haven't really compared the V to S in a back to back. We we finally decided on it over the Saab 93 we never considered it. I had driven the S when it first came out stateside in Sep 99.

V40 is definitely versatile. We've slept in it on trips. Folded the front passenger seat forward (cool feature) and put all out luggage on it and threw sleeping bags in the back on pads. We've loaded it to the gills and even stopped at IKEA and added a kitchen table to the load without problem. Fuel economy wasn't noticeably hurt either. But the car was definitely packed, even with a loaded Weekender roofbox. Driving back home from Christmas!

Plus, Volvo wagons are fun! The true sportwagon... right?!

yes the drag coefficient would probably be better on the wagon. Remember Volvo used the 850 wagon at first in the BTCC as it had a better coefficient than the sedan, I'm sure the same applies. I don't know about the handling since I have only tested a s40 (dealer didn't have a V40 when I was looking in the summer (they had just arrived here in Canada). But I do know the old 140 wagon did better than the sedan (especially when slippery) so it may be the more even weight distribution will pay off on the V40 too.
