Groaning Steering Column S80 1999

My 1999 Volvo just developed a new sound. When I turn the steering wheel rapidly, as it passes through the center position, a groaning noise is heard (maybe something like rubber against rubber). I took the car to the dealer and he said my car needed the steering limits greased which they did. No improvement, sound is still present.

This sound only occurred after the dealer replaced a solenoid on the transmission to repair a shuttering upshift condition. I'm thinking when the mechanic reassembled whatever he took apart to repair the transmission something wasn't installed, aligned, or lubricated properly.

Has anyone out there experienced a similar sound and if so what was done to fix it. I suppose I shouldn't be too concerned but noises that shouldn't be kind of drive me up the wall......

Re: Groaning Steering Column S80 1999

When the technician lowered the engine/trans far enough to get the trans side cover off, he disturbed the bearing/rubber boot at the base of the steering column. It is not visible from the underside when doing trans repair, and is often overlooked. If you look at the base of the steering column under the dash, you will probably find a large metalic bearing that looks out of place. It is. The bearing is supposed to be inside the rubber boot that wraps around the steering column. There is a lip on the top edge of the boot that holds the bearing in place. The bearing needs to be persuaded back inside the rubber boot. It's a snug fit but easy to do. May need to do some gentle prying with a screwdriver to get it in place. If you don't want to make another trip to the dealer, check it out. Should only take a couple minutes to straighten out. Good luck.

Thanks, Bob. Your explanation was exactly right. The bearing had moved outside of the rubber boot. I "persuaded" the bearing back in place within the rubber boot and things appear to be "OK" now.

      I appreciate the information....

      Take Care

        TC,

It's bad enough that the S80 has had its share of problems, and that VCNA has been generally difficult to deal with for many of us. But what adds insult to injury is when dealers compound the problem by not doing the job correctly in the first place, and then misdiagnosing the new problem they created for you. The fact that Bob was able to help is great, but you shouldn't have to depend on the internet to find a fix for your expensive Volvo "flagship." You should bring this fix to the attention of your dealer so that next time he gets it right when another customer has this problem.
