Please help!My car won't start S70 1998

Thanks in advance for any advice. I purchased my '98 S70 turbo in Sept. 2000. I took it to a registered dealer for it's 30,000 mi. maintenance service in Dec. 2000. Now the car won't start. When I turn the key, the dashboard lights come on, but if I try to use any electrical devices, eg the seat adjustment, radio, etc., a whirring noise is emitted from the center console. Isn't the car a bit young for the battery to have died already? And don't the lights indicate that the battery is alive? If the battery is almost dead now, shouldn't that have been discovered at the dealer in Dec?

Sounds like a battery and yes "in theory" it is a bit early to need a

battery but I would most 98 s/v70's have had to have their batteries replaced by now.

Volvo batteries have fairly short lives. The one in my 98 S70

went out about 6 months ago (but my 98 was purchased in April

97 -- the build date is on the drivers door).

Try jump starting it with another vehicle, and drive to your local auto parts store that does free battery testing (most chains do). Check for corrosion at the battery connections. I doubt any dealer analyzes your battery charge holding capacity when you're in for service. It's also very possible for all lights to work and the starter not to turn if there's not enough punch left in the battery. It's also possible that it's entirely unrelated to the battery, but that's where I'd start.

I got 7 years on my 1988 model 740, same for my brother's car. I would have the charging circuit tested.
