Emergency! Seat Back is stuck forward !?! C70 1998

Hi all, having a hard time getting information on the emergency fix for this problem.

My wife had my C70. She flipped the front seat forward and now it is locked. I can't get it to release. Pulled the release strap and the lever. They seem to be connected and I can hear something moving, but the seat won't release.

Sounds like the Y-cable is snapped. It's cold as heck right now and I need this car. Is there an emergency release to get the seat tilted back to the right position?

It's not the time or place to pull out the entire seat. need some help - pictures would be even better!

guessing that it's #7 I need to access?

Seat Back cable broke C70 1998

Ouch! I just took the skins off a 1998 S70, not fun either. There are more hog clips than you can count. 4 on the very bottom which you found. It is the front of the seat that is the problem: There are 5 hog clips on each side, running up the inside seam of the side bolster, the first on is about 2 inches above the seat. If you pull too hard on the seat cover, the metal rod the clips are attached to will pull out from the foam - foam is all that is holding the rod in place.
There are a couple more on each horizontal seam farther up the seat.

On both of my seats, the plastic push tab for the headrest lock was still locked in place. A hard push with my thumb resulted in a small 'snap' and then the tab could be pushed down to release the headrest.

Needless to say, work on this with the seat out of the car. The seat position should be just about 90 degrees, makes it easier to cary and remove the bottom clips.

I used 4 inch zip ties to replace the hog clips. I suggest using 6 inch long zip ties, much easier to work with. A pair of dikes wirks well with cutting the hog clips and removing the excess from the zip ties.

The mechanism for your seat back is in the rear of the seat, so first get your arm up there and see if you can replace the cable without taking the skin off. That would be the most efficient and you wouldn't need to take the seat out of the car? Just slide the seat forward to give you some floor space in the back.

My garage air temp is at 20F, don't bother coming up here!!!

Seat Back cable broke C70 1998

Thanks Klaus. I'm not really sure if I am "lucky" but my 98 C70 doesn't have hog clips, just some weird long plastic clip-job. My car is a later model so it seems to have more in common with the 99s than the 97s.

I ordered a new cable, plus the lever bezel (which I shattered) from Tasca.
Only wish I had some nice clean seat skins and new carpet to install.

I'd agree, removing the entire seat would make this a whole lot easier. Bit of a "commitment." Everytime I take the plunge, I start finding other problems.

19 was the high today, but tomorrow will be over 40. I expect that it'll be back to single digits in a few days.

Got it.. was *not* fun. C70 1998

Getting the seat skin to release along the bottom was very difficult. The loops that cover the pivot were not much fun, either.

So, once I got the seat cover loosened up, I was able to slide it up and see the release mechanism. At first, I could see no problems. The mechanism was moving just fine. However, I lifted the cover a bit more and saw the frayed snapped wire. Pulling the wire with a pair of pliers released the seat back. I pondered a wire patch, but my numb fingers and toes persuaded me to wait a bit. Better just order the right stuff. Do it once, and do it right.

Anyway, I'll grab some photos for posterity next time I get in there.
