Can a thermostat stick in a closed position? S70 1998

Coolant seems to overfill the bottle and then drop way down. Ideas? Thanks

The OEM thermostats generally fail to close when they brake, other brands can fail in the closed position which will cook your engine.

From what you said, yours appears to be opening after it goes over the boiling point, the fluid level goes down.

Replacement is neither difficult nor expensive, I just did mine in 30 minutes or so. The hardest part was putting the air guide back on.

Yeah, they can fail in such a manner. It'd seem you have some sort of blockage. When you start the car, does the hose get warm once the engine says it is warm, or does that hose take a while to warm? When the thermostat opens, that hose will heat quite quickly. Much easier to diagnose that way vs opening it up.
