A rebuild by a reputable shop is not cheap, but at least the solenoids should be clean or replaced. The labor cost to R&R the tranny is around 8 hours, regardless.

Getting a used tranny is considerably cheaper, but you never know what you are getting. Good scrap yards will give you a 1 year guarentee, but labor is not included.

There is a kit for one of the solenoids (IPD) to keep the tranny from shifting hard. Check it out if and when you replace the tranny.
