Transmission lock S40-V40

My 2000 S40 has 105K miles and never had a transmission service. The fluid is very dark and yesterday I started the car,the check engine light came on,the arrow next to it was flashing and the car didnt have power taking off as if it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. drove it for 1 or 2 miles, turned off.restarted went back and forth on my driveway a few times and tranny unlocked, getting full power again. Disconnected battery, arrow on dashboard stopped flashing and disappeared, just the check engine light still on. Will have to get the scanner see the code and erase it.
My question is : what could have caused the problem? The fact the fluid is still original could have caused it? Should I have it changed? Tks

First and foremost, flush the fluid. If you have it flushed, make sure the garage does not use a flushing machine.

When there is a tranny fault, the flashing arrow is turned on and the TCM goes into 'limp home mode', which means it will stay in 3rd gear all of the time.

You might have a dirty, worn, PNP switch. Rowing the shifter usually clears it for a month or two.

Tks Klaus. I have two questions. When the tranny is flushed you mean all the fluid out, right? because I think that there are ways of flushing that get only part of it out.
Second question what does TCM stand for?
PNP switch is what and where is it located?
      Tks again

There is no way to get ALL of the fluid out of an automatic tranny. Your best bet is to dump cold fluid (car sat over night) using the drain plug. Measure the drained fluid and pour the same amount of new fluid back in through the tranny dipstick. Then 'flush' the rest of the fluid using the cooler hose at the radiator - 2 quarts at a time or until it looks pink again. Total ATF used is 10-12 quarts.

The PNP switch is at the engine end of the shifter cable, below the air cleaner and battery tray. It tells the TCM(transmission control module) what gears to use. It also turns on the back up lights when in reverse.

Just went to my mechanic who cleared the codes for now. One was P0705 the other I can not remember it but started with P1xxx. first one was something "transmission range sensor switch malfunction (PRNDL input). Is this the switch you were talking about earlier?

That's the PNP switch. Part is readilly available, just make sure it is for the S40.

You might want to Google "s40 pnp" and see if there is any write up on it.

PNP switch and Neutral Safety switch are the same, correct? Looking around on the net I noticed the one for the 2000 S40 costs around $235 while for 2001-2004 costs around $110. Doesnt seem too complicated to replace... Anyway tks v/m for your help . Have a good New Year!
