supposed crack in oil pan. 850

I have a '96 850 GLT with 192,215 miles. I took it to get an oil change. A week later there was oil on the ground and it was a quart low. I took it back to the shop and they said that it had two little hairline cracks the oil pan and that oil was weeping out. They wanted to replace the oil pan then and there, but I didnt notice them with my naked eye so I just took it home to see if it would leek anymore. A week later after several days of long distance driving, there is no oil leak at all that I can decipher and the oil level is normal. I can get a used oil pan for like $125 just in case. Should I wait or have the work done? Any advice?

Lesson learned. I usually change the oil myself but had no time to do it recently. I had them put on a Mann filter that I had brought with me. I have since taken it to my trusty Volvo mechanic and he informed me that the oil plug was not properly screwed back on. No cracks at all. Surprised, I think not.

As Klaus has said DON'T go back there again!! Those places are notorious for shoddy work, over diagnosing problems, falsifying problems and manufacturing work for themselves that isn't needed. They created the leak on purpose to get you to go back. If the pan it cracked, which is probably not the case, I would suspect that they pounded on it to case the crack!

Depends on the oil change place. I have NEVER seen an oil pan crack where the drain plug is, never. My current car has a leak at the drain plug and I suspect that the 'mechanic' reused the crush washer or didn't torque it down enough. It only leaks when hot.

Any mechanic that wants to replace the oil pan on these 5 cyl engines is nuts. It is not an easy job, requires special RTV, and the pan is expensive. Plus, he would have to show me exactly where the 'cracks' are and how bad they leak.

I suggest not going back there. Besides, they always use the wrong filters. I would rather pay a Volvo dealer than take the car to a fast lube place.

"...Any mechanic that wants to replace the oil pan on these 5 cyl engines is nuts..."

But they weren't really going to replace the pan. After tightening the plug that they forgot to tighten the first time, they were just going to CHARGE the owner for a pan replacement.

Take a really good look at the oil drain plug and filter. See if you find any oil near them. There is a good chance the shop didn't tighten the plug or filter enough then corrected it and cleaned the area when you brought it back.
