Weird rear end issue V70-XC70 1998

Just bought my first FWD Volvo after many years of RWD. Car is great but sometimes when in the middle of a left curve the car suddenly feels like the rear end is going to slide around and gets even worse if I hit the brakes. Almost feels like someone grabs the steering wheel and suddenly gives it another eighth of a turn. I think it is a problem is in the rear wheels,it feels like the rear pulls to the left if you get on the brakes hard. Any ideas? Thanks.

In a recent issue of Rolling magazine, I read that the 850 was designed to rear wheel steer a bit in an emergency turn - perhaps your car is the same. If this is so, almost anything loose in the rear end could be your problem.

All the lugs are tight, the tires are all in great shape and the same size. I am going to lift it up tomorrow morning and inspect all the suspension, bushings, ball joints etc. Any usual trouble spots on these?

One more thought - are all the lug nuts tight ?

Hmmm. Stuck rear caliper? Worn bearings? Worn out bushing? Mismatched tires?

No idea, but a few things to check: Is your front sway bar loose or have the bushings died ? Is one of your rear tires inflated to 90 PSI ? How are the rear parking brakes ?

Greg
