buying from individual whose car is still under volvo credit or finance...

Not sure if any of you have bought a car from an individual who owed volvo credit or have sold a car that you had financed with volvo credit...but if you did I'm sure you could help me out.

Looking to buy a 96 850 turbo.

guy says he doesn't own it yet, ie doesn't have the title, that volvo credit does.

so he wants some money so he can send it to volvo credit (said fed ex a check) then get the title back from them and then transfer it to me.

Here's my question is there any better way to do this. It's not that I don't trust this guy, but I don't fully trust this guy...This involves me paying for his car so that he can get the title back, perhaps 3-5 days later, then get it transferred....

Thanks a bunch.

Joe - coming aboard

    Joe,

unless you are dealing with a brother/sister, father/mother, you would be nuts to front ANYONE (not just this guy) any money so HE can get HIS title. He may be honest but if he decided to bolt, you have no legal recourse.

If he cannot afford to pay off the car, FORGET IT. It is too much of a chance. Then, you will be stuck trying to take him to court and paying a lawyer to go after him and all of a sudden this car is not going to be such a deal, right?

Let HIM borrow the money from someone else and when you buy the car he can pay off whoever he borrowed the money from.

    Good luck!

I 100% agree, don't give this individual money. I went through a auto broker for the same situation. The broker charged me a flat fee of $500 US and I thought that was a deal. Everything else was taken care of just like buying from a dealer. He even took my car and found a buyer for the same price, including all that paperwork.

    DON'T give him any money.

This transaction should involve all 3 parties.

You should write a check to VF in exchange for document saying the title is clean and another to owner in exchange for title.

Then send both to State. They will send you a clean title.

    Check with your DMV.

I would just call VF and ask them what would be the best way to do this.

FWIW: I would not give him(the seller)a dime until I was 100% sure about the whole thing.....get it?

There are just way too many nice Volvos out there to take a chance on any one car.
