What about 100-watt H7 headlight bulbs? S80 2000

Just curious to know if the high beam headlight material can withstand the higher temperature. This question came up at the local dealer and nobody there knows if it's an ok thing to do.

Sure 100w bulbs will be hotter and take more amperage but, how long do you plan on driving with the high beams on? 1 minute? 1 hour? If it's a few minutes at a time, then you shouldn't have a problem. I used to put 100w bulbs in Bosch fog lights that specified 55w. The only problem I had was total bulb life was only about 8 hours. I did this a few times before I decided it wasn't worth the extra light. So I put 55w back in and aimed the lights higher.;-)

Don't do it! The heat will deteriorate the reflector and possibly the lens. Also, the higher voltage will result in reduced bulb life and may lead to wire harness and socket damage.

Your best bet is to get the Philips VisionPlus H-7. It produces a brighter, whiter light at the stock voltage (55w). You can find them at Autolamps Online.

    Enjoy!

H7 Vision Plus not available in USA and... S80 2000

...the cost of shipping a pair from the UK would probably not be cheap.

My wife's touring Spain, Morocco and Portugal at the moment; maybe I should call her at her hotel and ask her to buy me a set.

        Bart,

You really should have visited the website I linked for you.

They have a special where the bulbs are $40. US a set including S&H. You will probably get them in about 5 business days.

Brian, I did go to your link; it's in the UK... S80 2000

...but Rob corrected it for me. It said the Philips H7 Vision Plus bulbs weren't available in the USA.

Finally got to the Autolamps Online web site. Good looking site; thanks for the lead. And their prices seem pretty good, too.

Re: H7 Vision Plus not available in USA and... S80 2000

          Bryan,

Your link is for FosmoLamps not Autolamps-online.

          Bart,

I've ordered from Autolamps & it does cost $40(no tax & no S&H charges).

          Just curious...

          On 2001 V70:

          Lo Beams = H7

          Hi Beams = 9005 or HB3

          Fog Lights = H1

I have only been able to find VisionPlus bulbs in H7 and H4 configurations.

Are your configurations different for S80 ??? You say your Hi's are H7s ???

          Thanks,

          Rob

BTW: Swedespeed.com has good threads on the New 70 series and 40 series forums that addresses lamp upgrades. Hope this helps.

            Rob, thanks for link info. And yes, . . . S80 2000

...the S80's high beams are H7 bulbs. And the low beams use H7 bulbs, too. I'm making a spare-bulb kit to carry in the trunk. So, I went to the dealer to price them compared to the auto parts stores for H7 bulbs. The service manager says: "Let's say you had one burn out. Car's under warranty, so here's a free one. But they should be replaced in pairs so here's another one." That's service; two H7 bulbs for nothing.

I'm surprized that the 1335-lumen H7 bulbs work so well compared to the 1700-lumen 6005 bulb in our BMW. Maybe the S80 headlight reflectors are more efficient. The S80 has about the best headlights I've seen for standard halogen bulbs. But I'm still thinking about getting a bit higher output bulbs for the S80 high beams.

      Interesting; some car's headlight's.... S80 2000

....can take the heat of 100-watt bulbs.

      Thanks for the info.
