240 DL eough idle & engine dying

Hi all,

I have a '89 240 DL that is typically a wonderful car.

I've broken my car repairing teeth on this wagon, I like being able to do the work and save myself the labor cost of my mechanic.

I had problems with a rough idle when I had a low RPM a few months ago which turned out to be worn out engine mounts. I replaced the flame trap and the mounts and the car has been a happy clam.

I was driving a few days ago when I came to a stop, the car began running rough, the engine sputtered & died. I was able to get the started after cranking it twice but it smelled like burnt oil when I pulled over to take a closer look.
The same thing happened again last night.

I popped my hood this morning to look and feel around. My flame trap wasn't seated properly so I re-seated it thinking that would fix everything but it didn't. I started the car which ran smoothly for a minute or two then began to have little spurts where the engine switched between running smoothly and shaking horribly and then died. It did this twice.

I recently washed my engine and since then I've noticed oil seeping around the oil cap atop the engine block.

Why is this happening?
Thanks for any help!

Between the flame trap and the hose to the intake manifold is a PCV valve. Sounds like it is clogged. It can be washed out, but that is just temporary.

RWD guys will have a better solution.

Oil up top is from too much pressure in the PCV system (also, the seal on the oil cap is going/gone). Now that you've fixed the breather box, is there any smoke out of the dipstick? If so, that system isn't totally taken care of, it might have gunked up again and you might have to clean it again.

Assuming that all is good with the PCV system, how do your plugs look? Is there a decent chance that you're pulling much too much oil through the intake and your plugs can't handle it?

Are you sure that every hose is connected, and that you don't have a vacuum leak?

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?

I'm sure there's a couple of guys that can answer your question here but you posted on the AWD section. If you go over to the RWD section and post in the 200 section I'm sure you'll get a better response.
