V70 awd early models what issues can I detect while test driving? V70-XC70

Hi I have been reading about the awd's here and if I test drive a 2000 or earlier AWD Volvo can I detect issues with the drive train? Will there be rough engagement or noise or???. I just don't want to test drive one and everything seems fine, ie runs well, no noise or bad vibes and then have it go in a few months.

my dealer was willing to run the last three Volvos that I purchased through their Certified Car check list for one hour's labor.

I got a two page written report - they can tell you if an ant ever farted in the trunk!

It costs another hour for a compression check.

Once, I had one of their used cars checked, and the next day the salesman offered to pay for half if I would let him read the report. The service department would not let him see a report that I had paid for!

Hello, Your two sentences, "Once, I had one of their used cars checked, and the next day the salesman offered to pay for half if I would let him read the report. The service department would not let him see a report that I had paid for!", was amazing. One of the more wretched features of any car dealership is that the departments are run as little fiefdoms. In your case, the used car department must be run by someone the owner doesn't like at all. You'd think a report would be available to the used car manager as well as the salesmen so they'd have a stronger team. Now consider being a customer with a problem in such a warm and fuzzy setting. Not good. Kira

These models were problematic about driveshaft noises & vibration. Approx $450 to have rebuilt.
The A/C evaporator is a chronic failure.
The " angle drive " attached to the transmission for the all wheel drive is expensive & needs correct type of lubricant.
The driveshaft MIGHT make a clink noise when shifting from Reverse to Drive or vice versa. It may also vibrate on hard acceleration [ felt in the floor ] The center bearing when faulty makes a whirring sound that increases in pitch as accelerating from stop.
Best to pay $100 or so to have a dealer or VOLVO specific independent shop check it over before purchase.
