Power Steering Problem V70-XC70 2001

After ordering a steering gear for the 2001 S60T5 earlier this year and sending it back because the leak was in the PS PUMP (dripping onto the boot below) and then getting a pump with a bent pulley, I am back to the steering gear, this time on the 2001 V70T5. It was leaking out of the left boot, so obviously NOT the PS pump on the right.
I ordered a steering gear from FCP Groton and got it pretty quick. My friendly local guy installed it last Friday, getting done at about closing time. When I drove the car home I noticed the steering was a little stiff at times. Since I am still somewhat laid up and on oxygen, I have not been doing much driving lately, although my meds finally arrived on Saturday and I am getting better now. My wife and daughter complained about the steering over the weekend so I drove it over to the shop this morning, after checking the fluid level and belt tightness. Both seemed to be OK.
When the car is sitting still it seems to steer easily but at low speeds and especially on sharp street corners it is pretty hard. The guy who put the steering gear in looked it over and drove the car but had no idea what the problem might be. I am not sure whether this PS system has the so-called "speed related power steering". If it does, I am not sure where it connects. I am planning to pull the old gear out of the box and examine it but not sure what I will be able to find out from doing that. At least the temps are nice and warm here in Oklahoma!
Have any of you experienced intermittent stiffness in power steering? What did you do about it? Does it sound like I might have a defective steering gear? Should we see if we can get a pressure test on the PS system?

Any advice you can give will be most gratefully appreciated!

Hi George !
Sorry to hear you are experiencing trouble with your power steering.
My experience has been...if the original steered easily but leaked;the replacement should steer easily & not leak. We have replaced a few that steered hard & they did NOT improve with time. [ Replaced them under warranty & the replacement functioned perfectly.]

My 2 cents worth !

I was able to find out that the Volvo fluid is Pentosin CHF 11S. I got 3 liters of it
from a local parts house and we flushed the system this morning. It seems better now.
We'll drive it for a while and see how it goes. A little higher engine speed (not idling!)
seems to be better. I wonder if this is a sign that the pump is not putting up as much
pressure as it should....

The shipping is kind of a pain.
I'll call FCP today and see what they say.
Many thanks!
