aiming the head lights V50

The other morning, I had a collision with a deer. The deer ran off and I had minimal damage to my V50. The right side headlight cleaning nozzle cover on the bumper broke off. Cost to replace the nozzle and cover is $50. This evening I noticed the right headlight, where the deer hit, is askew and is aiming slightly down. The first thing I am going to do is look for more damage than meets the eye and the next thing is I am going to try to aim the right headlight. Do I have to take it to the dealer or can I do this myself (I do all of my own automotive work)? If I can do it how is it done?

You probably have more bent sheet metal that you will need to straighten out. Yes, the headlights can be aimed. There will be either a phillips head or allen wrench head screw to do the adjustment.

Bending the metal bracket will be harder to straighten than adjusting the headlight.

      Klaus,
Where is this sheet metal bracket you are talking about? What should I be looking for? Are there any obvious brackets that I can check and compare with the other side of car? Other than the missing nozzle cover on the bumper the car shows no visible signs of damage. The spray nozzles for the headlights still operate so they appear to still be in alignment with the holes in the bumper. Are the adjuster screws for the lights obvious? Thank you for your time.

Headlights in ALL cars are screwed into a sheet metal bracket. In Volvos, the bracket holds the headlights as well as the radiator, quite large. I suspect the bottom of the bracket was pushed in a little which is what is now causing the headlight to point downwards.

Fixing this is problematic. In most cases, you will need to remove the headlight and pound the bracket back into a reasonable flat plane. That means you will need to remove the headlight. To remove the headlight on newer cars, you might have to remove the bumper cover first!

You can 'try' aiming the headlight, but I suspect that will only work if the adjustment screws are long enough.

          Klaus,
I must be living right. I took our the headlights and compared the right side (where I hit the dear) with the left side and found no sign of damage. I decided to take my car into the dealer and have them adjust the lights just to make sure it was done correctly. They had no problem adjusting the light and mentioned no signs of damages. Today I am taking the bumper cover off to fix the headlight sprayer and cover. Thanks for your input on this issue. Truth be told, I too was anticipating damage but was pleasantly surprised.
