Code P1352 V70-XC70 2001

I received this code 10-24-12. P1352 #2 coil primary

Having dealt with the coil cascade in 2008 (3 went out in less than 1000 miles), I replaced all 5 coils and plugs with the ones recommended for my vehicle from IPDUSA. I reset the code.

It ran well for 2 days then I got the P1352 code again (no check engine light).

I switched the number 1 coil for the number 2 coil, ran good again for a day, then the same code.

This has been going on in much the same manner since then.

I have done the following items to track this down;
1. Switched the number 3 coil and plug with the number 2 coil and plug
2. added fuel system cleaner (I have been running Chevron Premium since I got it in 2007)
3. tracing the wiring from the connector at the coil to as far as I can get in the wiring harness (I have found a couple of worn spots and have taped them up).

I was told by a mechanic at the dealer this could be a compression problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cylinders 2-4 are normally the ones that have headgasket issues. If swapping coils does not 'move' the error message to the new cylinder, it means that the coil is OK. You also changed spark plugs without change.

That mechanic could be correct and you will now need to do a compression test. Just make sure you do it with a warmed up engine (oil present at the rings), not a hot engine.

Will try the beta reply. MacbookPro OS10.6.8 Mail Beta did not work.

Thank you Klaus, I was hoping for a reply from you. Used to lurk on the Brickboard when I had my 240 GLT (sort of miss it now 400,000 miles).

Started the compression test today, nice warm engine, hand tightened the hose from the compression tester into the Number 1 cylinder, cranked the engine 4 times as recommended, got a 95 reading on the number 1, then could not remove the hose... much later, got it out with a torx driver. There must have been a missing attachment on the compression tester (borrowed from O'Reily' s Auto Parts. Will try again tomorrow.

Cleaned the battery terminals and am currently checking grounds from battery forward.

Actually ran good this evening with no code.

I did notice that where the wires that go into head to the coils come off the main wiring harness is rather tight against the engine and full of dirt. I undid the upper harness support and sort of tied it off to the side. This seemed to temporarily cure the bump caused misses.

Compression check and I will continue to check the wiring.

The insulation for the wiring may be suspect. On my V70, the injector wires were starting to touch the head and wear, so I used a length of silicone vacuum tubing and slit it lengthwise. That covered the wires nicely and electrical tape kept the tubing together, much better than factory.

If any of your ignition wires are exposed, cover them and keep them away from metal. Sounds like you might be on to something...

No code last night or this morning approx 30 miles.

Not compression. 1=110 2=110 3=105? 4=110 5=110 (How easy when you have the right adapter.)

            On with the wiring check.

Those numbers are on the low side, looks like a cold engine reading. Normal for your LPT engine should be around 175 each. But they are nice and consistant.

              I agree, check the wiring.

                Since the last post I have done the following;

had the battery and alternator tested = good

removed old split loom from engine wiring harness to front of transmission and checked all wires from coils to that point,

re-taped and put new split looms on wires,

tested and cleaned engine compartment fuses (replaced #11 fuse for engine coils (did not test bad 0.0 resistance but replaced anyway)),

In driving, it appears that the engine only misses when the engine is cold, usually within the first 7 to 8 miles. I drove 250 miles on Sunday with no detectable miss (pre-warmed the engine before I left).

                Last Freeze frame data: 12/12/12
DTC that caused Freeze Frame P1352
                Engine RPM 2048
                Load Value 16.6%
                Coolant Temp 186℉
                Short Term Fuel Trim1 -4.6%
                Long Term Fuel Trim1 5.4%
                Short Term Fuel Trim3 -100.6%
                Long Term Fuel Trim1 -100.6%
                Vehicle Speed 22mph
                Fuel System 1 CLSD
                Fuel System 2 N/A

                Erased Code

I have one more engine compartment ground wire to clean and tighten (the chassis side of the braided ground line to the block) as soon as I can figure out how to get to it.

                Any thoughts appreciated.

                Joseph

Started the process after returning from picking up the compression gauge from town. Took some time to do, battery gave up and had to jump from the other car to finish. Finger tight may vary among users.

No code on evening drive down the hill or back up (where I have been getting a code).

Going to drive it for a few days to see what happens and then untie the wires and see if that generates a code and if so, I should know right where to start looking
