All Brake Lights Out; 97 855 (850 Wagon) 850

Dear Brickboard members:

Does anyone know of a typical reason all the brake lights (right, left, tailgate/high-mount) would simultaneously go out on a 1997 850 wagon?
The Number 12 fuse is OK, the bulbs all seem OK, the reverse lights work, the turn signals work, the 4 taillights all work, and no "Bulb" symbol is on the dashboard.
However, all the brake lights just stopped working yesterday.
Is there one connection that has a history of coming loose and causing this situation?
Will following the wires typically lead to some loose connection?
Happy Thanksgiving,
Ken

before you get a new switch, take a look at it and see if it is in place and looks like it is working when you press the brake pedal.

if it looks OK, see my next email.

it is very easy to identify the brake light switch as the culprit.

find the switch, pull the wires off the switch and connect the wires together with the ignition on.

if the lights work, you have proved a bad switch.

By brake lights, do you mean the lights that come on when you push the brake pedal? If so, maybe the switch died, haven't looked on my 850, so don't know how much hassle it is to change out. Typically, its not too bad to do.

Mike

Please note, there are 2 switshes at the brake pedal. One has 2 wires and a vacuum hose, this is the cruise control cancel switch. The brake light switch is a 4 wire switch and no hose. Easy to replace.

Hi,
Yes, the lights that com eon when the brake pedal is pushed. All three (the left, right, and tailgate lights) stopped working, all at once.
Thanks...We'll order a new brake switch since it makes sense that this would be the culprit.
Ken
