Tranny Problem V70-XC70 2003

Hi All,
I just bought a 2003 V70 for my daughter.
Great condition and service history but seller told me about an intermittent tranny problem so was worked the cost of likely future repairs into the selling price.ie the fitting of a second hand box.

I know the lousy reputation of transmissions in the 2000-2004 range so anticipated fitting a replacement box in the near future.

Reading other forum posts around the issue...clunk changing up from and back into first, maybe even associated with dropping back to neutral when coming to a stop..there were some posts about possible download fix?

Greatly appreciate any advice.

    Tranny Problem V70-XC70 2003

I empty mine throught the bottom nut, about 7/8. It gets about 2.9L out. Then fill that into 2L milk bottles so I know the amount tat comes out. I refill that 2.9L.
I drive a few days then do it again. I have towed several tonnes and need good trans and I believe it does the trick to get new liquid in over time revitalising the trans fluid.
I heard total flush is bad anyway.

Many thanks Klaus and BigRiver, (I knew you would come through Klaus!)
Yesterday I took the car to my Volvo mechanic mate and he drained the tranny and filled with new fluid.
He said that the draining will only ever remove about half of the fluid. So several flushes over a short period of time are needed?
I have had good success with Lucas products in the past, especially their Power Steering Stop Leak so I have added a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix to see if that helps.
Will definitely chase up the software upgrades and the Penrite product.
Thanks again guys and you know where I am Klaus if you are ever down this way.

    Transmission fluid V70-XC70 2003

The advice to flush the transmission is obviously correct but you may encounter difficulty in purchasing Mobil fluid type 3309 in Australia.

A suitable equivalent is Penrite ATF MHP. This is readily available through the Auto-Barn outlets at about $40 for 4 litres. You may need 4 or 5 packs to complete the job but the resulting improvement is virtually immediate and worth the outlay.

I have put the Penrite through an A-W transmission. I'm not entirely sure, but your vehicle may have a Geartronic transmission. Presumably these require the Type 3309 fluid (or equivalent) as well.

I am busy doing other stuff and fixing my new 1996 V70-XC70 2003

But, seriously, stop by a dealer and see if you have the current software updates. Flush the tranny with 3309 ATF, it will help to have new fluid and it is easy to do. In 03-05, Volvo changed the flow through the radiator, I think the output hose is still on top for 03 but not sure.

If the flush and programming doesn't cure things, stop by IPD's site and look at the Bn servo replacement they have. It might apply.

Summer is coming, I hope your AC is working.

I would love to come and visit sometime!!!
