oil smell XC90 2005

Hi Guys,
What would cause a burnt oil smell after driving around for a whil in our 05 XC90? It doesn't need to be driven for a real long time, just enough to get it up to temp for a while.

Thanks,
Ken

Our 2005 S80 2.5T had that problem. It kind of had that "oil dripping on a hot manifold" smell. Turned out it was the breather hose that runs from the oil separator box up to the top of the engine (routed through the opening between a couple of the intake manifold runners). It was torn open just above the separator box but the damage was hidden behind the intake manifold.

Hey Ken

I have the same thing on 98 v70xc.

It very well could be the PCV system is clogged causing positive pressure in the crankcase etc. Mileage and oil type are most active issues - >100,000 it probably needs doing. If you use synthetic that is better.

The simplest test seems to be to look for smoke coming out the dipstick tube at idle. You can find many other posts regarding this issue.

Mine is doing this dipstick smoking - the PCV is a large job that involves removing the intake manifold but well documented around volvospeed etc for the five cylinder and the six should be pretty much the same if you have that. Use volvo oem parts only if u do it.

Good luck and let us know what the issue turns out to be. I am getting a quote on it tomorrow, don't have a whole day to give to this.
