V70 Exhaust Manifold V70-XC70 1999

I accidentally posted this in the RWD forum. I have sadly left my '84 240T behind in CA and inherited a '99 V70 in TX. The previous owner's mechanic has said that the exhaust manifold needs replacing or it would likely go and be loud when it did.

I have always owned 240s but even had somewhat limited knowledge of them although appreciated the quality and relative ease of detecting issues. Having reviewed the repair records of this V70 (which are extensive!) I am reluctant to completely trust the mechanic who was not a Volvo specialist by any means.

Are there specific things I should look or listen for to (in)validate the claim that the exhaust manifold needs replacing. Just amazed that a car 15 years newer than my 240 has needed as much work as this 1999 V70, but hoping that was more a factor of the owner/mechanic and not the car. Is it normal for these to go on the V70s?

Thanks for your thoughts and sorry if this description is too basic!

Well, it is possible. The flex pipe could break and become rather noisy. You will know it when that happens, as the front O2 sensor will reach a limit and turn on the check engine light.

1999 was not the best year for Volvo, but better than the 2001.

You are correct to be suspect about non-Volvo mechanics. When in doubt, go to a Volvo dealer and ask for an inspection - about $100. They will produce a nice list of all sorts of stuff that is wrong with the car, hoping to strip your wallet of all greenery. BUT, that list can be prioritized and you could fix things as needed. My local dealer tole me that the steering rack leaked, another mechanic's shop said weep and not leak, I never did anything to the rack except flush the fluid.

Thanks for your response. It's definitely louder than it should be, but car is running great other than that. The previous owner got a quote for over 1k to replace exhaust manifold. If I drive it until it really goes out, do I risk other damage to the car, or just getting stranded?

Engine management will eventually throw an error code for the front O2 sensor.

Will you do any harm if you don't fix it? Yes or no. The cat converter might remain in good condition or clog.

$1,000 to replace the exhaust sounds a bit extreme. I suggest you shop around or look for a new flex pipe and a welder??
