Yet another oddity has popped up 850

I hopped in the 850 yesterday to head to work and noticed my dash lights were all off. That is to say all the illuminated stuff--speedometer, fuel gage, etc. I tried working the slide control to turn it up from dark to light, but it was already fully on.
At one point, they all came on for a fraction of a second, and were gone as quickly as they came on. That suggests to me a short.
Another possible clue is that I got my oil changed at one of those fast oil change places the night before the morning the lights disappeared. I'm wondering if there's a connector or something that they accidentally dislodged from where it belongs.
Anyway, If you've any suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks!

Jack - I'm glad that you love that car - you spend a lot of time with it!

It's nice that the Brickboarders can help us out.

    Another very common issue.
It is most likely the rheostat.
Can't really fix it, so grab a few at the pick-n-pull and swap it out.

Here's what the insides look like.

Does a rheostat really have to be this complicated?

Edit: Yikes! Sorry about the huge photo.

WOW. All that just to adjust the light behind the dash??
Does that rheostat live somewhere behind the dash...or (he said hopefully) somewhere in the engine compartment?

The switch is easier to get out in one piece if you take out the little speaker on top of the dash. That way you can get your fingers behind the switch and push it out.

BTW, you should never have the switch on full bright. The 14V will burn out the dash bulbs.

Thanks for the tips; I'll try that.
And I gotta ask Volvo: why give that much headroom on the rheostat if it's more than your bulbs can handle? (not expecting an answer, by the way)

No, it's the slider that you have been trying to adjust.
Simply pry it out of the dashboard. Use a small screwdriver above and below and on the sides of the switch. It will slide out of the dash.
