Volvo AWD/trans driveline reliability? Newbie wondering/Questions..... V70-XC70

I have no experience with any Volvos newer than say the 240 series and am possibly looking for a new wagon. I prefer a manual, but there doesn't seem to be a lot to pick from, (though I probably will still hold out)
My question is if I do go with an auto tranny cars say a V70 or an AWD model:
A).What is there to look out for?
B). How reliable are they?

On the earlier cars IO can do a lot of my own wrenching, (i.e. it is easy to swap out a 140 trans with OD or do a clutch in my garage), but if I have problems with an AWD system I am not going to be able to work on it, (lack of time, space and talent)...so if the AWD's are prone to having issues I would rather stick with a FWD.

    Volvo AWD/trans driveline reliability? Newbie wondering/Questions..... V70-XC70

The early AWD cars if not properly maintained can have drive system problems. The FWD cars are simpler and probably more reliable. IMO, you are on the right course looking for a 5 speed. Although they are hard to find...:) The simplest and perhaps most reliable of all these cars is an 850 or V70 wagon with a 5 speed, model years 1995 - 1998. The 5 speeds seem to be utterly bulletproof and most of the automatics are pretty good too.

My 95 850 so far (200k) has been a more dependable and trouble free car than my 90 240 was. And the 240 was a very good car!

Check out the following post. Personally, I have never heard of door lock problems with 850's (850's and S/V70's through 2000 are essentially the same car). I have owned 2 850's and never had a door panel delaminate. On the AWD cars, it is very important to the change the bevel gear oil and only use 4 tires of the same type.
