timing belt 850 1995

The last change happened at 140,000 - May 2004. It's 2012 and the current mileage is 182,000.

Haven't looked at the belt (they always look brand new when removed), but was wondering what the age limit is. Can I go ten years if the belt shows no wear?

Thanks, Claus.

Yes, the belt is over due. The hydraulic tensioner is quite reliable and is probably in good shape. The rollers do need to be changed with the belt.

The water pump depends on the type of antifreeze and how often it was flushed. The pump itself is not over expensive and I would change it with this belt change.

Have your sister save the receipt so the next woner will know when it was done and what was done. Go OEM on the water pump and antifreeze.

I guess it depends on how lucky you feel.
I would base my decision on the following...
What climate has the car been over the last 8 years;
How much will it cost to replace;
Is it an interference engine? - YES;
Who will be driving it if the belt breaks.

Thanks for the note.

It's going in for an inspection ASAP. I sold this car to my sister and my current S60 has much higher intervals, so I forgot about the age factor on the 850.

Question: the waterpump on the 850 is original. Last time the belt was replaced, the tensioner was replaced, but the pump was still solid. These pumps don't appear to have a high failure rate, but if it shows no signs of leak(s), weakness, should I leave it alone?

Dan

Post the water pump question under a proper title - what I have seen suggested is to change the water pump at the third timing belt change at 210K or if you see some of the signs that you mention.

The tensioner might have been changed because it was hydraulic and tedious to compress slowly, or it had leaked - the newer ones are mechanical and seem to have a better reputation.

7 years - you are over due.

See your maintenance manual - all items are listed for mileage AND time.
