Check engine light on S40-V40 2000

I have a 2000 s40 1.9t with 103,500 miles. Timing belt was due to be changed at 105k.Engine started making a noise and check engine light came on as I drove it to mechanic who told me the timing belt tensioner was bad. Changed it along with the timing belt. Charged me $750.Car seems to be running ok,but check engine light still on. Back to mechanic who told me the code says "camshaft sensor " advanced or something. Told me to start the car 25 times and if after that light still on he probably need to change sensor. I Also did some search on line and some one says that could be the sensor or the Vvt hub or valve. Does this make any sense? I would like yr opinion tks.

Copy this into Google search: volvo s40 vvt

$750 for a Tbelt replacement is really tough to swallow. Wait for 25 engine starts and see if the noise goes away, along with the CEL??? This is a mechanic?

        CEL = Check Engine Light
After spending $750, this mechanic should be able to reset your CEL for free.
You can then see if it relights which would indicate a problem.

Unless he doesn't know how to reset the CEL with a scan tool. His ineptness would be very surprising considering it is 2012.
Even the dinosaur writing this knows how to reset a CEL with a scan tool.

He did reset check engine light. However the light keeps coming back on and the code shows "camshaft sensor advanced" or something . Does it mean he has to replace the said sensor?

Perhaps the scan tool is correct and it is the camshaft position sensor.
I think that may be a common failure...but not positive.

There is more (though lately not a lot) action there regarding small FWD models.

This morning I took the car back to the mechanic to solve the Light on problem and something strange happened that left me more worried. As he pulled in the car into the garage bay the car lost power going fwd and the arrow for winter drive on the instrument panel started flashing. As if the car was stuck in 3rd gear(car has automatic transmission). Read the codes on scanner: besides original code there were two new ones related to transmission. Unplugged battery/clear codes and car regained power and arrow light stopped flashing. Drove the car around everything back to normal but Check Engine Light still on. Read code and now there is only one (pending code) but Drescription Unavailable. Told me to drive around to see if code(s) come back....I'm thinking of looking for another mechanic but I'm afraid he wion't be able to do anything if he can't read the code to give reason for CEL on... Dont know what to do...

A few years ago I had a CEL that would not reset.

I tried the battery disconnect, but that didn't work.

So I purchased a ScanGaugeII tool that was supposed to read codes and be able to reset the light with the push of a button. That didn't work either.

I called the manufacturer of the ScanGaugeII tool and told them it would not reset the light. They gave me a detailed description of a different way to reset the light. I still needed the scan tool, but had to program in a bunch of different numbers as opposed to just pushing a button once.
In the end, with their guidance, it reset the light.

So which scanner (that would give you code, description and reset light) do you recommend? There are so many on-line...

I couldn't ever recommend any particular one because I just don't know enough about them, but the one I have is a ScanGauge II. It's a few years old now and it cost about $160 when I got it.

Yes, there are many to choose from.
