1999 volvo s70 engine block coolant drain S70

Hi Everyone,
I am wanting to change out the coolant and get any dirt or rust out. I was thinking the best way would be to open the engine block coolant drain. Does anyone have a picture of what they looks like and where it is?

I saw some pictures of it while surfing the internet but none are very good.

I don't bother with the drain plugs and go the messy route of just disconnecting the large bottom hose from the block. That drains both the radiator and the engine. The engine drain plug is in the block, just forward and above the large hose.

If you already replaced both radiator hoses, why do you need to 'flush'? Sounds like you already did that. You should never find any rust in the system as it is mostly aluminum alloy, including the cabin heater core which can not be drained.

Remember to use a good quality antifreeze (1 gallon) and distilled water. Drinking water contains calcium and other harmful by products.

      Hi Klaus,
I just wanted to make sure i got all the sediment of anything else in the block out. In the past i have seen small amount of fine dirt looking particles.

Your call, but I would simply loosen the lower hose where it attaches to the radiator. BTW - This would be a good time to replace both hoses if they are original.

Thanks for the tip. I actually replaced both hoses already

        Coolant Block Drain Nipple S70

Here's a head gasket guide that addresses the drain plug on the 1st page.

        and the photo

To give you an idea of the geography, the bracket below the nipple is for the carrier bearing on the right ride axle.

        ---ALSO---

If you went with URO hoses anywhere in the system, set aside the money to replace those things with OEM Volvo hoses or SAMCO Silicone hoses ASAP.

Don't trust URO hoses for anything more than a temporary fix! IPD and FCP sell URO. It's false economy. URO is cheap junk - not worth the frustration of paying for the same repair twice.
