Want to install block heater on '00 S70 S70 2000

Apparently a winter package offered a block heater plus other appropriate goodies, so it should be possible to install one. Where? And what part do I get or order?

This is for a friend's 2000 S70, not turbo. Local Volvo dealership was no help on this. I got a copy of the ZeroStart applications .pdf file, no part listed by them for that application.

Thanks!!

There is no 'package' from Volvo that includes a block heater. A good battery, alternator, and 5W30 engine oil is all that is needed to start the car if your friend likes to go skiing in northern Vermont. Locals in the Mystic area will never need it to start a car.

Of course, your friend can buy a block heater from an aftermarket source, remove a plug from the block and insert it. Folks around here do have them, but only use them when the temps get colder than -25F, but those people usually have American V8's and are using 20W40 syrup.

      Thanks Klaus!

I think our trusty local mechanic can find the proper diameter freeze plug heater for car and install it. Do you know the size and location?? That would make things easier.

My friend who would use the block heater does indeed live in Mystic, CT. And certainly would not need it to get the car started here.

This would be installed for fuel economy reasons. My friend typically drives only a few miles, maybe 5-10 minutes, and then 30 minutes later needs to drive a few miles again, either to her next appointment or back to home. The car's fuel economy under these conditions is pretty low, as it warms up only after quite a few of these short trips. Warming it up to nearly operating temperature electrically would save fuel. The cost of the electricity would be far less than the cost of the fuel saved.

I'm not personally eager to open up her car's cooling system for this installation, there's always the risk of not getting all the air out when refilling and one could get into trouble. Also those freeze plug openings are sometimes hidden on the back side of the block, with a full shop lift being the best way to get access to them.

Thanks again for any further information!

There is a freeze plug on the firewall side...

This will probably cost her more than a few gallons of gasoline! What she needs is a backup car, like a used Prius?

      Klaus,
I don`t know about a Volvo "winter package" in the US but here in Alberta the dealers certainly offer a a winter package which includes a block heater. When we bought wife`s XC70 from the dealer "used", I assumed that it had a block heater as most cars in Alberta do. Found later this car was from the East & consequenttly no BH. Dealer wanted $600. installed....no thanks!
This will be winter # 5 & using syn + parking it in the garage most nights helps. Once in awhile when we are drifted in, the car has to remain out by the main road & depending on overnite temps it starts fine.
Still think a BH would be a good idea.
      Rich
