Oil dip stick V70-XC70 2009

Well I sold the 1998 T-5 AWD after 185,000 miles. But not before replacing the battery on its last working day. $150.00 and the labor was free.

And found a CPO 2009 XC 70. Just had it trucked to my home. And checked the oil and it seemed bone dry. So we added three quarts of oil and not sure whether we overfilled it. Car seems immaculate. Was serviced every 5,000 miles and has 35,000 miles on it. Not pleased to find a seemingly dry dipstick. Now the very clean oil seems over the oil fill range by one range.

Klaus, I want to hear from you whether I did something schtupid? And of course how to rectify.

One quart over is too high. You are on level ground?? Get a catch pan, loosen the drain to finger tight, put on a rubber glove, and carefully, carefully, drain some oil. Don't worry about the crush washer. Check the oil level and then torque the drain to 25lbs. Clean up the mess.

If you had a MightyVac, you could insert a hose down the filler pipe and suction a quart of oil out without any mess.

When you think all is OK, run the engine to warm. Turn it off and check the oil again after 2 minutes of cool down.

Klaus I shall do that. I am kicking myself for not waiting to see if being on the car carrier did not change the oil level. Do not want to froth the oil on the inaugural run. Thank you for your patient counsel.

I am looking forward to Klaus" answer as well.

When I check the dipstick on our new XC 70 -

After 1 hour - looks half the range down

    Over night - looks full

After two days - looks 1/4" over full

    What could cause that?

BTW - I added 1/2 QT after I checked the oil for the first time - so, it could be that much over.

Where does the oil filter reside on the 6 cyl? If it is up high, it could be a leaking check valve(?) allowing the oil to drain slowly from the filter.

Other than that, I am clueless. A good question for Volvo NA?? Write them an Email and then post the answer back here.

Good suggestion Klaus - I am going for 5000 mile service next week.

        5000 mile service !!!

I am going to service the car at 5000 miles instead of 7500.

My dealer will do 5000 for free, I will pay for 10,000 and they will pay for 15000. After that I will see how it goes.

        How;s that for a dealer? !!!

Except for vacations, my car gets low usage - I'll be surprised if I hit 10,000 before next year at vacation time, but I will get it serviced before vacation.

        I serviced my 740s and 850s every 3333 miles - two 5Ks and 10,000 according to Volvo's book.

When I had 3 female drivers in the family, I liked a good tech to look over and under my cars often.

Did you see my MPG figures

          The MPGs are great.

I agree about the 5K first oil change. But, after that you can increase the distance without harm. Unless you make a lot of short/cold engine trips.

I always changed the oil AFTER long road trips, never before.

I agree with you Klaus, but I want the inspection.

When we drove our 745 GL to Saskatchewan, 4996 miles in just over two weeks, I went an extra 1000 miles before changing the oil.
