No air circulation / flashing lights at start up. 850 1993

ECC in '93 850 - Both recycle and A/C lights flashing at start up. - Blower is working but I only get air volume through defrost vents. All other vents whisper of air. Blower seems to work in all speeds and in Auto. I can hear recycle fan turn on with switch. Temperature does change with thermostat change. A/C has not been working for a while... another issue. Faults show 2-3-3 (floor defrost damper motor position sensor open circuit or shorted to 12 volts) and 3-2-3 (ventilation damper motor active too long). I checked all related fuses and they seemed fine. Can anyone tell me if this indicates that there is an electrical issue or that a damper motor has failed and perhaps needs replacing? How about relays or any other possibility to consider before I begin the search for a damper motor. Thanks for your suggestions.

I always have to refer to my Haynes manual for the 850. The floor/defrost motor is on the passenger side. Remove the passenger kick plate, glove box, and knee bolster (ignore the warning printed on the bolster, just undo the bolts and wiggle it out.

The motor in question is against the center console area, but there are two motors. IIRC, the one higher up is the passenger side temperature motor. Do not apply 12V to a disconnected motor, that will break the internal stops!

Also a good time to spray the recirc damper while everything is out of the way, just to the left of the blower.

I would take the panels off, start the car, and hold my hand on each of the 3 motors and verify that they work before R&R. Just move the vent selector. A strong small flashlight helps to see the flapper move.

The car is drivable with the panels removed, just looks ugly.

      Hi Klaus,
Thanks for your response but... if the cause of my problem is the ventilation damper motor, as referred to in your first reply, then my Haynes diagram shows this located on the drivers side... hence my last question about what I have to remove to get at it. I was thinking it was the ventilation damper motor also and as you say, want to get at it before it really gets chilly.

You have 2 problems: Faults show 2-3-3 (floor defrost damper motor position sensor open circuit or shorted to 12 volts) and 3-2-3 (ventilation damper motor active too long).

The 3-2-3 is on the driver's side, up high. This might be fixed with a little lithium grease sprayed on the damper rod that is exposed, or silicone spray.

The harder to fix, 2-3-3, points to #15 in the Haynes manual. The motor is not responding.

Fixing both requires removal of the kick panel and removal of the knee bolster, on both sides. Do the driver's side first, it is easier. The passenger side will need to have the glovebox removed also.

Have you erased the codes at least once? Before erasure, try turning the vent selector knob to each position, allowing 30 seconds for each one. Do this twice in a warm cabin and then erase the codes. See if they come back with the selectors in auto.

Ok... Thanks Klaus... I will try and erase the codes as per your instructions and see what happens.
Yesterday i got to the drivers side ventilation damper motor, spayed the shaft and was able to open close
the outlet vent for feet on the drivers side manually but the motor itself did not become functional.
I don't know how you guys regularly do this stuff and not be crippled... taking out the kick panel and then knee bolster was one thing, but actually getting my head in a position where I could see these motors and attend to them required some strange positions and contortions. Very difficult to find a comfort zone... and that was the easy side you say!!! Do you have elevated, lie down work benches or something???

Anyway... I'm sure that the 2nd time round is just easier... (I hope) thanks for your help and suggestions.
My baby's {'93- 850) got 445000 on her and I'm shooting for the 1/2 mil. She's starting to show her age though... like the rest of us I guess, and needs lots of TLC.

I wound up doing my 1995 because the dealer was totally inept. Removing the seat and placing down a beach towel helps a lot on the driver's side.

If you don't feel the little motor hum and the plastic gear in back move, then you will need to stop at a pick and pull and get a 'new' one. No one ever crawls up there in a junk yard. You are good for parts up to 1998 for sure and possibly 2000 S/V70.

If you go to a pick&pull get the one for the passengerside also, just in case.

Your vent damper motor just needs a little silicone spray, it is getting slow from lack of use. This is the damper that controls fresh air Vs the cabin air only. I have run the recirc switch a few times to help the vent speed up, but it became slow again soon.

The 2-3-3 could need a new motor. If you pull it from a donor car, not the position of the damper on the donor and try to make your damper be in the same position when putting the motor on. You will need to go to Mode 5 to get the system to accept the new motor - a real pain in the neck.

Get it fixed before it gets cold out or you will not get any heat on the feet.

      Ok... thanks Klaus.
Can I remove the trim/soundproofing from the driver side only to get to this damper motor?
Or do I have to take it all off of both sides, glove box etc.?
      Thanks.
