I really don't like my V70 V70-XC70

I bought this thing, after 27 years of owning the same 245. It is not up to the standards that the 245 set. I'd trade it heads up in a minute. There is nothing really wrong with it, but it just does not measure up. Anyone else feel that way?

Well, I like mine. It comes down to what few other new-ish vehicles met the need for what I was willing to spend. The need was long-distance comfort for my tall frame, car-like handling, enough interior space for a quadruped-heavy family to travel, and decent enough fuel economy to let me sleep at night. A used P2 or P3 wagon was honestly the best show in town.

Things that I don't like relative to my long-departed 745: It's missing a pedal, and the stick-like thing in front of the armrest is marked in gibberish (PRND+-) instead of numbers that I understand. I hear these are extremely widespread defects, and I continue to hope for an applicable TSB. Also, a modern engine of the same displacement as a B230 would have been plenty, especially without the defective shifting assembly.

That's about it. This is a nice car. I have been driving a Honda and a Toyota since '05...both good vehicles in their own Japanese way...but I'm glad to be back in something that I still recognize as a Volvo wagon.

As far as I'm concerned, Volvo died with the 93 240. Period!

    No.

The Volvo (relegated to winter beater/Home Depot/station car work) has outlived the Acura that replaced it, and is likely going to outlive the BMW that replaced the Acura.

The verdict is still out for me. Just added an '02 V70 to our family stable of vehicles to go along with '93 240 sedan. The newer is a great car, low miles and very smooth ride, all fancy options including sunroof and leather interior so it's keeping my spouse happy who is quite hesitant of higher mileage cars despite the make. I am happy with it so far - feels very safe for our youngsters and they like the interior upgrades compared to anything an early '90's vehicle could provide.

      I really don't like my V70 V70-XC70

I bought my previous Volvo, a 1985 245GL in December 1984. I only had 130K on the clock when I sold it last December. The car was solid, dependable and very nimble even though it had the AW70 transmission. The car had every possible option. This V70 is well optioned, but does not exhibit the same feel as the 245, nor does it give me the same sense of security that the old one did. If I could, I'd trade for my old one heads up. The new owner is probably too smart for that. I feel like I'm driving a Ford Taurus wagon with this one.

        I really don't like my V70 V70-XC70

I just went through the same experience. Well, actually, it all started four years ago with the purchase of a used 2005 S80 2.5T for my wife. I was really leary of it, but I was surprised how much it felt like a 240 to drive - solid, beefy, seating position felt the same, etc. Plus, my wife liked it and it was her ride so as they say - happy wife, happy life. So far it has served us well, other than the fact that the headlight bulbs don't last as long cuz they're always on.

So then about a year and a half ago I totalled my nice 745 NA wagon. Whenever I need to purchase a car, there are none that I like available. When I DON'T need a car, they're suddenly plentiful. Anyway, I buckled under family pressure to buy something a bit "more modern" and bought a 2003 V70 NA plain Jane that I knew needed a bit of work. For nearly a year I slowly brought it up to snuff, but all along I felt just the way you describe about the car. Even though it's a close cousin to the S80, it feels completely different - lower, lighter, less beefy - just different.

Then one day I had to haul a bunch of sod from a nursery about 20 miles to my house. The sod was very wet and heavy so I rolled out a bunch of pastic from the front seat to the tail gate and loaded that baby up. I have no idea how much weight I had in there. I said to myself I was going to see what this car is made of. I couldn't believe it! Driving down the road I hardly felt the load.
That was the day that I acquired a new respect for the V70. I always thought, judging from the exterior appearance, that the V70 didn't measure up to the interior volume of the 245/745/945. But I'm thinking differently now - it doesn't seem that much different. I guess I'll keep it a while.

Haven't owned a 240 but have owned RWD Volvo's, 3 960's. FWD S70, 01 V70T5 plus V70XC. All different but all good. As for beefy, the S70 saved my sons life, falling asleep at the wheel at 70mph and going under a guard rail. Have loaded up all 4 wagons and never seemed like one was less than the other. 01 V70T5 gave best gas mileage and had the most HP. The 92 965 had the most soul. It loved to cruise at 80mph and had the best seats. It was also my introduction to Volvo.

BTW, I'm currently looking for an S/V70 and/or another 960.

My '98 v70 AWD is the best car I have ever owned. It is comfortable, reasonable quick, solid. I prefer it to the '04 xc90 family hauler (though that's a good car, too, with the 2.5T).

Look around for a 2004+ V70R with a manual shifter. That will change your mind!! The 2001 Ford version of the V70 isn't worth much.

My Dad bought a 2001 V70 with low miles a few years ago.
The pros: Best riding Volvo I've ever driven until I drove a 2011 V70XC recently. The car probably saved his life or at least prevented more serious injury when he was rear-ended at 65 mph.
The Cons: Uninspiring is a good choice of words. Nice, comfortable, safe car but not sporty unlike my 95 850.

I suggest driving a 95-97 850 or 98-2000 S/V70. Particularly the turbos. Those cars are responsive, simpler, and a lot more fun than a 2001+ V70. They are also worlds sportier than a 240.

FWIW - I had a 90 240 for 10 years and I enjoyed it very much. However, my 850 has been a more dependable and trouble-free car than my 240. Starts every time. I still get a charge out of driving it every time too! Has 200k runs great and feels like it has many more good miles left - well I hope so anyway...:)

After 30 years of owning and driving Volvo's I bought my first new Volvo, an '04 V70 2.5T Titanium Edition. Very nice, posh car, somewhat soft ride, but after 5 yrs and only 40k miles on it, I sold it. It was uninspiring.
I took a '97 965 in trade and was very pleased with the RWD 960 for 3 yrs. Although I sold the 965, still have my 91 245 which I enjoy every minute I drive it (fully loaded with every suspension upgrade and a few performance upgrades too).
