Bad oil smell V70-XC70 2000

3,000Kms ago, I've had my 24,000Kms service performed and the dealer also did a full tranny flush in view of my complain for harsh cluncking shifts. I've noticed lately a real bad oil smell (smells like hydraulic oil??) after a normal drive. Noticeable both inside and outside the car. Actually worse from the outside when parked in my car shelter. I checked all fluid levels and they are all topped correctly.. however, I noticed the engine oil level is a tad over the max line.. (about 1/4 inch over). Can this be the culprit? Is it harmful to the engine having too much oil?

I've been running Mobil1 since the clock showed 16,000Kms.. never a bad odor. I concur, the AWD has been running strong lately since it's been pretty slippery out there.. differential related? I've never smelled diff. oil so I can't tell.

Any clues?

Thanks!

Re: Bad oil smell V70-XC70 1998AWD

My brick had a leak at the front transfer unit that smelled real bad too. Gear oil has a pungent smell and was more apparent after the car had been driven longer, then put right in the garage. I had leaks at the rear prop shaft seal and the driver's side seal. The rear seal lets gear oil seep and spin out on the exhaust pipe, thus smelling more. It never dripped on my floor. Get under your car and look carefully near the transfer unit. I'll bet you find the source of the smell. BTW, the repair was done under warranty (both times) and a TSB was followed pertaining to changing the fluid type and quantity. No more leaks in the past 1000 miles yet.
