Fuel Leak V70-XC70

My 2004 XC70 has developed a problem. I have recently noticed a gasoline smell coming from the car when stopped. It will at times be hard to crank, turning over but no start for a few seconds. I looked under the car and noticed where it appears that gas has been running down from the top of the tank. Is it most likely the fuel pump flange which is a recalled item? Will the tank have to be dropped or is there an access panel from under the rear passenger's seat? I have not had time to investigate thoroughly but I would like suggestions. Thanks.

There are access panels under the rear seat. There are 2 fuel level senders, 1 containing the pump on the right (pass) side of the car. There is a hose assy and wiring that goes from the right side inside the tank to the left side. Both sides have to come out. First, you remove the sender on the left side, attach a piece of mechanics wire to the hose that was clipped to the bottom of the sender. Then you remove the sender/pump assy on the right side. Pull the wire through the tank with the hose. The wire is used to fish the hose/wiring back through the tank on reassembly. The tank does not need to be empty. If the gage shows a little less than 1/2 tank, you can proceed without spilling fuel, but it's a lot neater with near empty tank. Alignment of the senders is important. There is an arrow on each and a corosponding mark on the tank. The hard part is loosening/tightening the sender retainer nuts. There is a special tool for this.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out this weekend.
