The air pump on my 97 850glt continues to run after the engine is turned off.I have disconnected the ground wire to the pump (located under the battery) in order to stop it.. Is It ok the drive the car with the air pump disconnected?

    Yes. At least untill you come up for an emissions test. The air pump is only supposed to operate for a max of 2 minutes after a cold start, to help heat up the cat. that is it's ONLY function. Disconecting will set the check engine light.
