I have a 2004 xc90 with 115K miles on it, and the power steering fluid is running low. The manual calls for a specific Volvo synthetic power steering fluid. I am wondering whether there are less expensive substitutes that I can use to avoid the long drive and cost at the dealership. Can I use Dexron III (like I do for my '98 V70)? Thanks, as always!

I just looked at your owner's manual:

Power steering
Grade: ATF

If the fluid is pink/redish, use synthetic ATF, like a bottle of Mobile 1 ATF.

The synthetic Pentosin is for newer cars.

No, the PS fluid must be synthetic. But you should be able to find replacement. Just google it and there is plenty of info.

Hello Klaus:

I have a 2003 XC90. It was fine until early this year the SRS-Air Bag warning light is on after got free software upgraded from Volvo dealer. According to the dealer, the parts SRS-Air bag..etc need to upgrade as well and cost about $ 1450. Is there a way to turn the light off? or do I need to replace any parts?

I'm getting mixed messages on Matthews and Volvo forums: I see a product from Valvoline, but when I search the site, I don't see a synthetic. Similarly, there is a picture of a GUNK product, but I cannot find the same product on the GUNK site. Can you point me in a direction?
