Visco Differential, what is it? S80 2001

Help with a little technical info please. A visco differential is offered as an option when ordering a car for European delivery. What does this do? Is it a limited slip differential? How effective is it? Is it worth the $310 to an upstate NY driver. TIA. JL Fox

It is a viscous coupling and is installed between the right drive axle and trans case. It acts like a limmited slip system. Car comes with traction control standard. V/C would come in handy when you turn off the traction control system. I guess it depends on what kind of driving you do.

Thanks Bob, I understand what you said but I'm having trouble with the concept. What conditions would a slip coupling external to the differential be designed to help. I usually leave the tracs/stability in my 00 S80 T6 on and do normal all weather driving. I'm considering replacing an older S70 and believe my 00 came with V/C (I did see a coupling such as you described on the axle) and don't know if I should order it now that it is not standard.
