S60R intermittent surging and twice stalling > $1,000+ bill! S60 2006

S60R w/ 55k miles. Symptoms w/ warm engine. 1) Intermittent > Surging ahead from standstill. 2) Restarting (warm) engine, stalled pulling out of parking lot. This happened two different times. Restarted and drove fine to home. 3) NO CEL (check engine light) / no fault code.
Had it trucked (not towed) to shop. Dealer said they fixed it: had to trouble shoot, corrected a "bad connection" (?) at "idle controller" -- $300d, ready to be picked up.
Then, they called back and said "not so fast." When they were "pulling it in to the carwash, it surged again." They said they found a bad ignition coil pack and suggested we replace all 5 ... now it was over $1,000 (not even kidding).
Thoughts? (they haven't done the coil pack yet)

IF there is a bad coil, replace just the one! It is rare to have all 5 go bad. You can buy a coil for $50-60.

Ask them which coil is bad and replace it your self with a 10mm wrench. Then ask to have the 'old' parts put in the trunk, you might want to send them to the NJ office :>)

Hard pressed to believe a bad coil would cause surging, if it was junk then you would surely have a CEL. I'd be curious if the ETM was playing up? If you can duplicate the issue and an indy shop close by I would get a second opinion.

Although not a Volvo, I just replaced a bad coolant temp sensor on a friends car, idle would rev up while in park for no reason, plugged the OBDII in and monitored real time data, witnessed the engine coolant reading going from -40F - 192F - replaced and all is well....worth a shot looking into.

If the surge(?) is a short duration, it could be a bad coil. A misfire for a couple of seconds followed by proper firing might just cause a slight surge until the ECU catches up. The short error would be logged as a Pnnnn and then erased as the spark begins again.

But no way can 5 coils cost that much.

On another matter, someone is looking for a good code reader. Could you tell John A. what you have?
