The newer the car , the more complex the electrical system. Newer cars require CAN systems. Make sure your car needs this, as the cheap scanners don't have the logic.
You normally get what you pay for. Really cheap scanners have pass/fail lights. You want one that will give you the actual Pnnnn code and the ability to erase a code. Some scanners will erase all codes with the push of a button, but this requires the car to 'relearn' itself.
See what they have at the local autoparts store. There are some PC based scanners that come with a DVD and cable, these are much more sophisticated than the hand held and some can do Volvo specific items like seats, climate control, etc.
There are so many on the market, so it depends on your wallet and how often you expect to use it. I will not recomend any, the homework is yours.

Code reader should be able to reset codes (assuming it has the function to do it). What code would it have set, I thought it didn't monitor fuel pressure?

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?

I am going to pick up a reader, and you are right it does not measure fuel pressure..

BTW, fuel filters are good for around 90K miles.
Check with an autoparts store and borrow one for parking lot use. CA and a few other states do not allow them to reset any codes.
You do need a code to figure out where the computer thinks the fault may be.

Thanks Klause.. yes I know i need a reader, re: miles.. 90K max, for me 25K , but I have a few extras, and oil, filters, (trans fluid 25K) etc at summer.. I'll look for a reader..THX. I know it is unrelated to the filter..
