How to - Muffler to Cat 850

The new cat is in but the junction to the old muffler is noisy/leaking.
So what to do? I went to a Meineke Muffler shop, and they suggested welding
a sleeve, and I practiced my only Russian word: NYET I want to be able to
swap in a muffler when need-be.

Then I went to the auto parts joints, and see they have a variety of magic bullets for muffler repairs... (I've usually been disappointed in that collection of overpriced crap!) I grabbed a tube of Permatex "Exhaust Repair" which is
" " Made for the Professional " " ..... It's some kind of high Temp RTV maybe..
(I'm afraid to try it and kept the sales slip)

I'm still wondering if maybe ordinary furnace cement is all that's needed in the
cat to muffler joint. The sad part is that the clamp is not so good at pulling
the joint together.... What's the story here?

Has anyone put in a muffler and made up the joint to the cat without it leaking?

Thanks, Bill

I tried the same clamp fix with the same results. The problem as I see it is that you cannot replace a straight section with that coupling.
I tried some "muffler bandage" wrap prior to clamping it up in an attempt to seal it but that did not work. I have a feeling that furnace cement will not hold up to the vibration at a joint. Same thing with the Permatex stuff.

I think the best way is welding but am reluctant for the same reasons you are.

You could go new cat + muffler for only around $600 in parts!

Maybe try a different muffler shop - like a custom shop that will build an exhaust for you. Although then you may be looking at more than you want to spend. I'm not so impressed with the quality of goods from Midas / Mienike etc.

I share your opinion about Midas and Meineke, and don't like the short lived parts
they use. The one piece muffler might be OK if there's no junky extra parts
to rot out? Maybe you can get a new muffler from them every 26 months under warranty? Maybe they'll want to weld it in and have another bag of sad surprises
      attached to their warranty?

Permatex has a large product line, see this:

      http://www.permatex.com/products/Automotive/specialized_maintenance_repair/exhaust_system_maintenance_repair.htm

The directions are vague for the Muffler Tailpipe sealer Item #80335
They say to wet the surfaces with water first and then assemble.
Then clean up with water before it dries.
No clue about waiting for it to cure.

      I think it's worth a try.

        Bill,

Don't buy a muffler from the chains! Your car will never sound as good as it once did. I understand the OEM stainless steel muffler is no longer available and anything else is loud and will sound like s**t. When my car eventually needs a muffler I plan on buying a used one...:)

Let us know how you make out. Best of luck.

        Jim

          That Permatex goop worked! 850

I split the leaking muffler to cat joint, cleaned everything with brake cleaner,
then wet the ball and socket parts of the joint with water and applied that Permatex Muffler adhesive. It's not RTV. It's probably 50c worth of furnace cement from the look of it!

Anyway, I covered the clamp as well let it cure 30 minutes,
          and that joint is fixed.

I'll cross my fingers that it's durable, and I notice that the Bosal Cat converter
is way smaller and some noisier than the original.

If I was to do it over, I'd have gone to a local muffler shop that specializes in cats, They weld in a generic for about $200. I could have had it done cheaper
          without all the hassle.

Also I've heard negative comments from some of the local mechanics that the replacement cats are fakes, Nowhere as good as original.

Yes, the goop is enough to hold against the small amount of pressure in that part of the exhaust.

Knockoff cats are not 'fake' but are made with cheaper materials than OEM. They do not have to comply with the EPA. Of course, if you were really concerned about the air we breath, $1200 would have fixed it properly!

for what it's worth...used that Permatex goop to repair the cat in my other ride('91 chevy K1500, 210k)...cat had what looked like a freeze plug, partially blew out of converter, even dealer said I'd have to replace whole converter...no thanks...using a tube of goop, and a molly(picture hanging screw/hook) was able to repair in about 1/2 hr...3k miles later, still hanging in there...

    Lousy design, in my opinion.

Might work fine with Volvo original parts, but with anything out of the ordinary, that clamp design is the weak link.

I ended-up having to trim the bell and flare on the ends of the pipe and welded proper two-bolt flanges to the ends of both pipes.

Problem solved. Unfortunately, it took a lot of time and consideration to get it right.

If Meineke can do the sleeve thing, but split it in half and put proper flanges in-place, that would essentially be doing what I did.

    Good luck.

Furnace cement will work on a small spot. Did on my 240's downpipe...:)

Check some of the recent posts. Don't remember the name of the thread, but in one there is a discussion on how to successfully mount the muffler to the cat.
