2004 XC70 Codes P0420 and P2188 V70-XC70 2004

Hello,

Car is stalling at start-up but seems to drive fine on the road. It hasn't stalled when stopping at a light or while sitting in traffic.

I replaced the MAF with a used one and changed the air filter. No luck so far. Would the next step be to look at the front o2 sensor?

Thanks.

It is the O2 sensors that are triggering the code, they are probably not the problem. You are running too rich. Have you had any hoses removed and now they leak air into the manifold? Are your spark plugs OK? Is the insturment temp gauge in the middle?

Klaus,

Thanks for your help. I haven't replaced any hoses and the temp gauge is in the middle. I changed the plugs today and the idle still hunts and stalls when first started. I give it some gas and hold it for about 10 seconds and it usually drops to normal idle without stalling. It hasn't stalled yet while on the road. I looked at some of the vacuum lines in the front and none of them appear to be damaged.

Thanks,
Bob

Have you ever cleaned the throttle body real well? I just did that the other day on my wife's S80 at ~115,000 miles. It didn't look ALL that bad, but it did seem to idle smoother afterward. Or at least I told myself it was smoother so that I could feel better about having gone to the effort. I noticed that when the throttle body was off of the car, the plate doesn't completely close. This would tell me that the idle speed is actually controlled by the plate itself and not through an air bypass valve like the earlier fuel injected models. That being the case, it would seem to me that having a clean throttle body bore and also clean plate (especially at the edges) would be important to achieving a smooth, constant idle. Besides, it costs nearly nothing to do, except for a new gasket.

Chris,

Thanks for your recommendation. I had the throttle body cleaning at a dealership about 3 years ago. Their invoice says they cleaned and reset. At the time, the car was having minor idling issues. It would jump between 600 and 800 at idle.

The first start this morning was fine. Later in the day, it was acting up again.

Thanks,
Bob
