up arrow flashing & long thin hose under front of car came undone 850

sort of cross-posting here under hoses.

new problem this weekend!!

up arrow flashing and i had not much acceleration, so i drove in L / 3Rd to pull over and have a look. all fluids there, shifted, but a thin, long hose was undone at the front of the car. couldn't tell where it connected, and i tried. what are these [there are two of them] and how to reconnect, please? can i post images here?

no one was available, have 33$ in checking, so i drove home in low gear without incident thank goodness. could the hose undone cause the up arrow/transmission gear issue?

i hope that is the case, please and thank you!!

Checking transmission fluid is not as simple as checking your oil.

From my manual - Park the car on a level surface - with the engine idling. Slowly move the gear selector lever through all the gear positions and then to position P. Wait 3 minutes before checking the oil level.

The dipstick has a cold and hot side. The oil level should be between the min and max marks

Wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth - Warning - the oil may be HOT.

Cold transmission - oil temperature 105 degrees F This a normal temperature for the transmission after idling for about 10 minutes - - If the temperature is below 105 degrees F the level may be below the min mark.

Warm transmission - oil temperature 169 degrees F This temperature is reached after driving for about 30 minutes - - At oil temperatures above 190 degrees F the level may read above the max mark.

Personally - I have my dealer's techs check the transmission level - When I check my fluids every week or so, I am happy if I see any fluid on the stick. I look at the color and smell it.

If they are long skinny hoses, they probably go to the charcoal canister in the left front fender.

    Did you hit anything?

My bumper and canister bit the dust when I hit a raccoon at 65 MPH.

      dear klaus and james,

it was the evaporative emissions line, and found where it connected by gently pulling the hose toward top of car. removed the air cleaner assembly box, see section c : http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28973

added small amount of transmission fluid because lost some pulling the old radiator. didn't put much in.

fluid registered too high at cold engine, and had the car towed to garage. they told me today the fluid was low and the up arrow light was out. what the heck?
they will drive it tomorrow and check further.

thank you for responding. i really appreciate this board.

people think my car is old and i should get something else, but i do love it and want to learn more. don't have garage of my own, but enjoy the mechanical work.

now, i'm wondering if i am really missing something here- i.e., a total idiot.

was reading older threads here on checking fluid when cold.

the day after i had trouble driving the car, it sat all night, and when i checked the fluid in transmission while car was cold, the stick read too high.

however, day before, when the up arrow light first came on, i pulled over and checked the fluid which was too high.

shop says it was too low and no light was on.

Two things, the transmission fluid level must be checked with the engine running. If the engine is off, the ATF will drain from the many passages inside the tranny and over fill the sump.

The shift arrow will be on if you drive in L or 3, or in "W" mode. Make sure the "W" is not engaged, it should be in "S" or "E".

When the PNP switch wears out, and it will, the contacts inside the switch will confuse the transmission computer and it will not know which gear you have selected and turn the arrow on. Most often, 'rowing' the gear selector from R to L about 20 times will clean the contacts and turn off the arrow for a couple of months. If the arrow comes on again while in "D", stop by an autoparts store and get the codes read. The P0nnn codes will tell you what is wrong.

The flashing up shift arrow notifies you that there is something wrong with the transmission. Initial guess would be the PNP switch finally wearing out. To verify, with the engine off: move the gear shift to R, then "row" the shifter from R to L about 20 times. Put it in P and start the engine. The shift light should have gone out and you will be able to drive normally for a period of time.

I have no idea what 2 hoses you are refering to, are they thin vacuum lines, which side of the engine, up front by the radiator or next to the throttle body? I also do not know why you added ATF to the tranny when you replaced the radiator. Any ATF in the old radiator would be a minescule amount.

When you are on a budget, you can go to most any auto parts store and ask them to read the codes for you - free. California does not allow for erasing the codes.

Your check engine light should also be on, verify that the bulb is not burned out when you turn the key to position II.
