Adding third seat V70-XC70 1998

I am considering purchasing a '98 V70. Can a third seat be added? If so, how much do they cost? And how difficult is it to install? Thanks!

Re: Adding third seat V70-XC70 1998

We ordered the rear jump seats on my wife's (now my daughter's) '88 Colony Park. My wife is a Girl Scout Leader, and thought she might need it to transport the troop. I think it's been used maybe TWICE in the last 13 years/177,000 miles.

I don't have the seat in my own Volvo, partly for that reason, partly for safety concerns.

You could consider "used", there are literally TONS of 850-70 series wagons in junkyards. Since there are a lot of teeny bits, pieces, and mounting hardware, you might actually wan to go to the auto recycler yourself to make sure you get everything.

A word of advice, before you spring for the $1,000 or so to have this done, find a wagon with the third seat (friend, dealer, etc.) and try it out. I rented a '01 XC a few months back for work and when I got home, put up the seat and put my kids back there to go out for ice cream. Safety concerns aside, what struck me is how little room there is back there. The well for the childrens' legs and feet is very shallow. Could not fit my seven year old and could barely fit my 4 year old. We are used to the third seat area in our Taurus, which is much larger. I would pass on the third seat. If you must have the extra seat space, perhaps another vehicle would be more appropriate. Just my opinion.

Re: Adding third seat V70-XC70 AWD 1998

I purchased a 98 V70 used and installed a third seat. I purchased the part at a Volvo garage sale at 60% off, paid about $700 Cdn (normal price $1200) and had it installed at a dealer. Cost for labout is listed at close to 3 hrs if not more, so multiply your local Volvo dealer shop rate per hour by 3 and you'll get the total cost. For me, by the end of the day, it costed me $1000+ Cdn. My little 5 year old boy sure appreciates it.

Re: Adding third seat V70-XC70 2000

      Hi JT,

Where in Canada are you located? 60% is awesome! I'd go for it for my 2000 XC if I can get a special like this. Was that a recent Volvo special or we're talking a couple of years ago?

Above pricing, I wonder how safe this is for the kids though.. I'd hate myself if something bad happens such as a hard rear-end impact. I guess Volvo wouldn't be selling the seat in the first place if it didn't pass its severe crash tests.

      Thanks!

Re: Adding third seat V70-XC70 AWD 98

        Eric,

I live in Vancouver, BC. There is a dealer here Docksteader Volvo that always have an annual garage sale around May. They sell accessories at an affordable price, it's really the only time of year to get upgrades :> !

With respect to safety concern, there was a big thread on that topic I think about a month or two ago. Not surprisingly, you read opinions on both sides. If you go and search the archives, you'll be able to make your own decision about safety and rear facing 3rd seats.
