Starting to think that this V70 may have been a mistake V70-XC70

In addition to the P0032 code that I can't get rid of, the A/C fan came on all by itself with the car parked and the key in my pocket. Is this symptomatic of a bad final stage resistor, or what. Hopefully one of you can give me some insight.

That's because you just drove the car with the AC on. It is designed to run the blower to dry off the evaporator. Been that way since 1999.

From 1993-1998, the evaporator cores have failed and leaked. The problem was parking the car after running the AC, the condensed water on the evaporator was mixing with the dirt coming through the air vents and corroding the outside of the evaporator.

The 'fix' in 1999 was to turn on the cabin blower after the car is turned off, letting the evaporator warm up and dry. This fix, along with a clean cabin filter really works. But, the 'system' can be beaten by turning the car on and off... unfortunately, that also allows the dirt to eat the aluminum evaporator.

Replacing the evaporator is a 10 hour job, similar to the heater for a 240.

Hello, The fan is turned on to dry off the evaporator. I jump in to answer your question marks (7 of them) because I think this is one of the better features ever designed into a car. It makes productive use of the insane amounts of data transmission capability of these cars; although, a simple timed switch could do the same job.

I can't help you with the P0032 code. Does anybody know if a bad (i.e. cold) thermostat can create a bad "comparison point" with which the ECM generates such a code?

At this point you have only one problem; possibly a small one. hf63's question is a good one. Perhaps you jump to conclusions too easily. Kira

I will have the correct 02 sensor in hand tomorrow. I suppose we will see. I have already smoke tested the vacuum system, and know reasonably well that there are no leaks. Would you know how to remove the repeater lights so I can change a bulb?

What does the P0032 code for your car indicate? What year is your car? What engine?

P0032 says O2 sensor heat out of range. Replaced the O2 sensor and cleared the code. Keeps coming right back.

The car is an 01 V70 with the 2.4 liter non turbocharged 5 cylinder engine. The fan was the interior A/C fan. I put the key back in and turned it on and off and the fan stopped.

You are correct, the 2001 Volvos (all of the USA versions) are not worth what they are selling for.

If you have replaced the O2 sensors, the other posibility is a vacuum leak!!!

Did you used OEM sensors or the universal type????

I already did the smoke test and had replaced the o2 sensor with the universal sensor from Bosch. Ordered the OEM sensor and installed it this morning. Happily i have no codes. This new sensor was made by Denso. Hard to believe a Swedish car (belgian in my case) can speak Japanese but it does.

Did the fan shut off by itself?

Had you just driven the car?

Could it have been the cooling fan?
