Evaporative control system leak V70-XC70

About once a month , my T-5 FWD V-70 sends up an error code (PO455 ) that according the little booklet that came with the reader, means Gross leak detected in evaporative control system. The cost of letting a gallon of gas evaporate every year is less than the $80 an hour the local mercedes/volvo guy gets (a nice professional wage but his shoulder joint will soon be artificial due to overhead used every day for thirty years ) but I wouldn't mind fixing this. I've looked everywhere and I can't find a hose I am sure belongs to that system. Is this worth the trouble?

Evaporative control system leak V70-XC70 2000

The 'gross' leak is usually associated with the gas cap or the "J" pipe cracking. The "J" pipe moves around from year to year, but for 2000 I believe it is by the gas tank as the charcoal cannister is also in the rear of the car.

You could make a smoker, several amusing types come to mind, and force smoke into the evap system and see where the smoke comes out.

What is the "j-tube' V70-XC70 2000

Thank you for your reply Klause. This car may have been rear ended somewhere in its life. The gas cap is new but the tube onto which the gas cap does its capping does not fit in the door . I have to shut the gas cap door so hard that it bends a little. the tube projects past the rubber seal that fits around it and to the back . I tried unsuccessfully to move the tank once. Is the tube going from the door to the tank the "j-tube"? It may be bent of deformed in my case

What is the "j-tube' V70-XC70 2000

Hello, Just two thoughts. The "J" hose is so shaped so it can hug the side of the charcoal canister tightly. The canister on my FWD V70 is 5"W X 4"T X 14"L and is located between the rear wheels where your rear differential lives. If it's not beneath the RR passenger seat then it's likely above the gas tank. This is potentially difficult since the tank must be lowered, I was told. I went through this search a while back.
The second thought is to mention a post I read which looked all too possible. The fuel filler is thin aluminum and there is a grounding strap near/on it. If it's lain incorrectly it can wear a hole in the filler. Mine was OK. If you want to grab the bull by the horns drill out the plastic "pop rivets" which hold the plastic fender liners in place. There are 2 or 3 sheet metal nuts in each liner too. This is no big deal and the large replacement pop rivets are available on parts store trees. UP, JACK STANDS, WHEELS OFF, DRILL, REMOVE NUTS, LINERS Now you can see what you're looking for. Kira PS Klaus, thanks for helping me with this back when. K

Thank you georgeandkira V70-XC70 2000

Maybe I will take a look at what's behind that fender liner. When cars get to be over ten years old, all rubber parts could use some inspection. The rear brake hoses might be cracked and crusty as well. Something is off in that part of the car anyway and I have a rivet tool. Thanks for your note

The J tube does not connect there, but at the charcoal cannister.

Because your car had been hit, you need to look at the filler pipe and also at the vent pipe that goes from the top of the tank to the top of the filler pipe. The cap must seal tightly, so put a little Vasoline on the cap seal or the top of the pipe.
