Engine System Service Required ? V70-XC70

My daughter driving our 2003 V70(with 138,000miles) just called stating that message on dash states "Engine System Service Required" lighted up in yellow and that hazard warning light is on a solid red. Can she continue on her trip or must the car be taken in immediately for service ?

Engine System Service Required ? V70-XC70

I can understand the dilema, one says to get the car serviced, the other says turn off the engine!!!

Are there any other lights on? Temp gauge OK?

"I" would check the oil level, coolant level, ATF level, and if all were OK, then continue to the next autoparts store and have them read the codes. Or, go to a dealer close by.

You didn't say if the car was loaded down and it was hilly. The ATF could get hot in the hills and force the car into a lower gear.

Are there any corresponding symptoms or changes in the performance of the car ? She can go to an auto parts store for a free code read but she should not erase the error code with that same reader. If it were me , I'd be edgy and on alert but I'd keep going.
