02 xc70 Exhaust system V70-XC70

Wife's wagon has developed a leak in the exhaust and getting louder by the week. What options are available?
- volvo parts/dealer service, naturally
- any other 3rd party options?

What would be the likely cost if going through the dealer?
Anybody have experience with any other exhaust systems such as Starla, etc?

TIA.

    Starla exhaust etc. V70-XC70

No experience with your car, but Bosal was pretty good on my 240. Starla, as I recall, was not bad but neither matches up to OEM. They may last longer on a XC70, but those brands were good for about 3 years on a 240 on the salty, snowy roads of New England.

As a follow up, I went with Volvo original equip as I was unable to find any great discount going with 3rd party. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough.

The parts were heavier than I thought. Fortunately the extra jack stands were very handy.

All in all, the mrs. is happy and so am I.

As usual, Klaus offers good advice.

On our 850s, two of them had their rear hangars rot away. One broke the front pipe, the other I caught in time and had the hangar repaired

On one of our 740s, my wife backed into a snow bank and broke the tail pipe.

Any chance that the system was damaged?

We just replaced our first 850 system at 170K and 17 years old, yours seems a bit early for complete replacement.

I don't believe the 2001+ cars have stainless steel mufflers like the 2000 and down cars. Certainly the front muffler isn't stainless. Before my Dad's 2001 V70 was totalled I remember looking under the car and the front muffler was already starting to go at 10 years and 88k miles.

FWIW - My 95 855 exhaust system with close to 200k is still going. Hope I didn't just jinx it...:)

YOU need to find out where the exhaust is leaking. Manifold, down pipe/flex pipe, muffler, etc. Then, and only then, can you start to price items.

Tasca has good prices on OEM:

It's more than a leak. The seam at the front and back of the muffler is rusted and a large portion of the outer shell has come undone. It's toast.

Looks like this muffler and the pipe leading to the rear muffler are one piece. The pipe looks to be welded to the rear muffler.

The rear muffler looks a little crusty around the edges too.

It's been on there 10 years and 105k miles.

I'll check with the tasca link for pricing. Thanks for the link, Klaus.

BTW, where are good points to put the car up on jack stands?

My 1998 had two mufflers in the rear because of the AWD and saddle tanks. I guess things changed because there was a clamp on the tail pipe where it went up and over the rear axle - a bit hard to see, I had to feel for it.

I jacked up the rear at the normal tire changing spot before the rear wheel, and then put the jack stand under the bottom shock/suspension mount. Don't forget to block a front wheel.
