My radio barely works 850 1995

I knew this when I bought it, but it wasn't a big factor in my decision. That said, it would be nice to fix or replace it. The only channel that works (both for the radio and CD player) is the right channel, and in fact, the only speaker I can determine is producing sound is the one in the right door. There are 2 dash-mounted, 4 door-mounted and two on the back deck. I took the radio out, unplugged and re-plugged it, to see if a connection had worked its way loose. It hadn't. I took the speaker out in the left door to see if there were connection problems there. There were none. I'm thinking of going on e-bay, where there is no shortage of Volvo radios for $50-$100. But I would hate to go to the expense, change it out, and then have it work the same. Any suggestions that I haven't yet thought of?
As always, thanks!

I'm thinking about getting a brand new radio though with all that stuff I don't understand like bluetooth, ipod etc.

I have the cheapest 850 with no sunroof and no dash speakers. I think the unit is a -710 or such. Cassette.

I was going to remove the rear speakers or test them as people said the magnets disconnect or something, but I couldn't figure out how to get to the rear speakers. I did remove my left front and hooked it up to an old stereo and it worked, so it's not the speaker. Must be the amp.

Start by removing the plastic piece across the top of the door opening and work your way down.

Well, that didn't work out like I wish it had. I bought a used radio off e-bay and it arrived just now. I took it out and installed it, and Voila: I still only have one speaker that works--the one in the passenger-side door. Worse yet, I put a CD in the CD player and it's not playing, and in fact, the player won't spit the CD back out.
Sounds to me like it's a wiring problem, although one would wonder why 7 out of 8 speakers don't work...but one does. On the UP side, that speaker sounds a lot better than it used to with the old radio. But for $90, that's not a very bright side.

Problem is common to those radios. It is in the radio.

Well then...maybe I'll proceed with the e-bay option. I'm thinking with 8 speakers, the stereo will probably sound really good. Though 95% of my road time I just listen to NPR.

You have a CD player in the radio? If not, get a better model that the 1996-97 car got with the single CD player.

But, first... Slide the balance and fader buttons from side to side and front to rear multiple times. This usually clears things up a for a while.

@ Klaus: I've got the lesser model, the 710 I believe. The CD player is in the trunk, and works. I thought about upgrading, but there would be repercussions when it came to the CD. The wired bundle coming out the back goes to the CD player back there, and I don't want there to be a mismatch between the wiring from the old unit to the wiring from the new one.

The CD player from the trunk should look like a coax cable and plug into the rear of your radio. ALL of the Volvo radios have the same plug in the rear for a CD player. I had the same setup in my 1995 850 and 'upgraded' the radio because changing the CDs while driving is a pain.

This afternoon I purchased a replacement radio on e-bay--yes, WITH CODE--and with a CD player. Am looking forward to getting that upgrade.

I purchase my used Volvo stuff from Pinkeys in Milwaukee, WI. Always get good stuff. If you need more info, holler.
