dashboard lights keep going off 850

When I am driving at night, which thankfully isn't often, the dashboard lights keep blinking on and off, fading when they are on and then mostly just staying off. I have to use a flashlight to see the instrument panel so I know how fast I am going. This car has been a nightmare with electrical issues but we have learned to get along with most of them. Help!

What timing, just had these same symptoms start happening 2 days ago.

I pulled the light switch and the dimmer hoping to figure out why it wasn't working.
I have a wiring schematic in my Haynes manual but it is somewhat unclear on the wiring to the dimmer.
Any chance anyone has a better wiring diagram for a '95 854T?

Here are PDFs for most models:

But do check the rehostat, it tends to get a burned spot.

        Nice. And thanks.
I suspect it's the rheostat, but my inquisitive nature wants to see why it's not working.
The times when the instrument lights do illuminate, moving the rheostat makes no difference in the brightness.

There was a recall on some 850 light switches.

There are two tabs and slots on the side of the switch that hold it together, The plastic near the slots breaks away. the switch may feel a little funny

You can fix it with a little tape.

I agree with Klaus, the little rheostat might be messed up
you might try a little TV tuner cleaner on it, see if it starts behaving.

Here's another hint, once you get the lights working, set the lamp level on the low side, since bulbs crap out faster proportional to higher filament voltage.

    Good luck, Bill

The 850's are known for having bad dimmer switches. If you get one at a pick&pull, pull the small dash speaker out and then reach behind the extra long dimmer switch and push it forward.

In the mean time, try moving you dimmer switch around and see if that helps.

It could be a couple of things but most likely the light switch. Try to get one form PYP yard if you can.
