Noise at startup S40-V40 2005

Been looking at an s40, 2005, 64K miles at an independent sales lot.
When started from cold, quite a 'roar' from the engine before it settles down to fast idle. Is it worth taking any further and what should it be worth.

What do you mean by roar? Is the engine racing or is it another noise?

On our '01, the cooling fan runs for a few seconds on a cold start-up - and that does make some noise. I remember finding it odd when we first got the car and may have even inquired about it. Still does it and since I never did anything about it I'm guessing that I was told it was normal.

engine races, perhaps a 'growl' would be more appropriate.
engine races for about 20/30 seconds before it settles down to a fast idle.
sounds like a throttle body problem to me? there was a recall

It should not go over 1500 rpm at any time. Keep looking. You want one with service history.

Thanks, Klauss, it is an interest aspect - to check the initial RPM.
If you know of a clean s40/60 going somewhere, let me know.

Take a look at autotrader.com for your area to get ballpark pricing, then look at craigslist.org for private party sales.

thanks, but this definitely a high rev engine noise.
when it settles down to a fast idle there is a lot of clattering/ticking
