Auxiliary Drive Belt Tensioner - Help !! 850 1995

I have has a "clicking" noise in the auxiliary belt area , which up until today I thought was a bad bearing in my auxiliary drive belt pulley.

This afternoon I opened the hood with the engine running and noticed that the Auxiliary Belt Tensioner was moving as the belt rotated. I don't remember ever noticing any "noticeable" movements in the auxiliary drive belt tensioner.

Is this normal? Or is it my auxiliary drive belt tensioner that is going bad?

I am pretty handy - is this a difficult part to replace (would not think so).

Thanks

Follow up: Re: Auxiliary Drive Belt Tensioner - Help !! 850 1995

Just went out and started the engine and turned ac comp off.

Clicking noise dissipates and the movement in the tensioner reduced to almost nill.

Again - the noise is from either the tensioner of the auxiliary belt pulley belt below it.

Re: Follow up: Re: Auxiliary Drive Belt Tensioner - Help !! 850 1995

Nathan,

This might help you..

Dealer recommended to me that I replace the serptine belt..after dealer installed the belt..i would hear screaching noise when it would be cold..

dealer recommended that belt tensioner was bad..I got that replaced too for $235..next day in cold weather ..the same sound started appearing..

turns out that the serptine belt that was replace was not routed correctly and a wrong belt was put on...apparently there is a bulletein that when replacing the belt ..it has to routed differently than the original belt..

I had kept the old tensioner and told the dealer to put it back and noise has never come back..

yes there was a little motion in the belt tensioner before i replace the belt..but dealer told me that belt tensioner usually don't go that fast..

so before you replace the tensioner..try replacing the belt with the right one..

i had 55000 miles on my car..

hope this helps..

Nathan,

Take the belt off and rotate & wiggle the pulleys around, feeling for play and "grittyness". They should both be very smooth with no play.
